Chelsea 0-1 Newcastle: Report, result and goals as Magpies grind out huge win

A clinical Anthony Gordon goal was enough to give Newcastle a famous win at Stamford Bridge, as Chelsea’s top-four hopes took a damaging blow.

Gordon broke the deadlock on 18 minutes, the only goal of the game coming from Newcastle’s first meaningful attack. Tino Livramento slipped Joseph Willock through the centre, and after the midfielder had seen off Reece James, his cut-back across the box was stroked home by Gordon from close range.

It was a lead Newcastle barely had to defend. Chelsea dominated possession throughout but were woefully short of ideas in the final third, with Cole Palmer managing just two tame efforts in the first half.

A smattering of boos greeted the home side off at the interval.

Visitors see out home pressure

Liam Rosenior threw on Liam Delap at the break in place of right-back Malo Gusto, but the change made little difference.

Newcastle sat deep and disciplined, crowding out central areas and frustrating Chelsea at every turn. Aaron Ramsdale denied Delap early in the second half, and the goalkeeper’s composure under pressure was a constant thorn in Chelsea’s side, earning him a booking for time-wasting in the process.

James struck the post with a free-kick in stoppage time, and Trevoh Chalobah headed narrowly wide from a corner, but Chelsea could not find a way through.

Joao Pedro nodded onto the roof of the net deep in added time to confirm the hosts’ misery.

The result leaves Chelsea’s grip on a top-four place loosening at a critical stage of the Premier League season.

For Newcastle, it was a statement win, and one that keeps their own European push very much alive.
