From Saturday to Monday, the 10th round of the Premier VRL League will be held, culminating in the most significant match at the end of the round.
The top Serbian clubs. Radnicki and Novi Beograd will meet in Kragujevac on Monday at 19:00. This match will showcase 11 members of the Serbian national team, including seven from Radnicki and four from Novi Beograd, all of whom are current European champions.
Radnicki and Novi Beograd approach this big duel with contrasting mindsets. On Wednesday, Novi Beograd secured a spot in the Champions League Quarter Final Stage, while Radnicki finished third in its challenging group. Radnicki is now considered a strong contender in the Euro Cup, but if it wins a trophy in the second-tier European competition, it will serve as a “consolation prize” for the team that has the highest ambitions.
Radnicki will enter the Serbian derby as a favorite. However, the Kragujevac-based team had the same role in both previous encounters this season against Novi Beograd and lost both matches. Novi Beograd triumphed 10:8 at home in the first stage of the VRL League and later defeated Radnicki 10:9 in the semi-finals of the Serbian Cup.
Radnicki hopes that, with the support of its fans, this upcoming match will be “third time lucky.”
On the other hand, Novi Beograd water polo players will arrive in Kragujevac with a sense of relief and confidence from their recent successes in Europe. They are the only club in the Premier League to have secured a victory in a European competition this week. Under the guidance of their new coach, Miodrag Mirovic, the team demonstrated a mature performance against Jadran in the Champions League match in Trebinje on Wednesday. If they replicate that level of play in Kragujevac, they could secure crucial points.
Over the past few years, Novi Beograd and Radnicki have dominated the Serbian water polo stage, with their encounters highly competitive and thrilling for fans, despite the disparity in quality sometimes being greater than it is now.
A surprising outcome on Monday would be only a convincing victory for either of the two rivals.
The round kicks off on Saturday. Primorac is set to face Crvena Zvezda after an expected defeat to Ferencvaros, while the Red and Whites appear to be improving their form in anticipation of upcoming challenges in the Conference Cup.
Partizan, like Zvezda, is gearing up for the second round of the Conference Cup next week and will host Sabac on Saturday. The visitors seek to reclaim the top spot in the Premier League.
Jadran, the best Montenegrin club, will play on Monday, following two consecutive home defeats to Serbian clubs (Radnicki in the VRL League and Novi Beograd in the Champions League). Jadran must secure a win against Buducnost to stay competitive with the top four teams. If the Montenegrin champions approach this match seriously, their victory should not be in doubt.
