Hyderabad: A severe coldwave continued to grip Telangana on Sunday, bringing biting cold conditions across the state and plunging temperatures to season’s lowest levels in several regions. Sangareddy emerged as the coldest place in Telangana, recording a chilling 5°C, while parts of Hyderabad experienced unusually low minimum temperatures, signalling an intense winter spell.
In Hyderabad, Hyderabad Central University (HCU) topped the city’s cold chart with a minimum temperature of 8.3°C, followed closely by Rajendranagar (9°C) and Moula Ali (9.1°C). Several other localities across the city recorded temperatures close to or just above 10°C, making it one of the coldest December mornings in recent years.
Other places in the city included Alwal (10.3°C), Gachibowli (10.4°C), Qutbullapur (10.7°C), Gajularamaram (10.8°C) and West Maredpally (11.2°C). Even traditionally warmer areas like Begumpet (12.1°C) and BHEL (12.2°C) reported sharp drops, prompting residents to bundle up early in the morning hours.
Across Telangana, cold conditions were even more pronounced. After Sangareddy, Vikarabad recorded 7°C, followed by Asifabad (7.2°C) and Adilabad (7.6°C). Medak and Kamareddy both saw temperatures dip to 7.9°C, while Rangareddy (8.1°C), Nizamabad (8.6°C) and Siddipet (9°C) also featured among the coldest districts.
Meteorological officials attributed the sharp fall in temperatures to prevailing dry northerly winds and clear night skies, which are allowing rapid heat loss during nighttime. The coldwave conditions are expected to persist for the next few days, especially in north and west Telangana.
