Coleen and Wayne Rooney’s friends have opened up about the state of the couple’s marriage — after he was pictured drinking with two mystery women at a party.
Coleen, 39, was also seen without her wedding ring after it emerged Wayne, 40, had drinks with two women at a pre-Brit Awards party in Manchester. Sources close to the couple, who married in 2008, have since branded the former footballer “an idiot” but other friends have now stressed the relationship is strong.
One insider pointed out Wayne and the unnamed women at the party went home alone. The friend continued: “Coleen is aware of the situation and is extremely protective of Wayne. She knows he has a drinking problem but is disappointed in the people who take advantage of him when he drinks… Her view has long been that women circle him — and that’s how these situations arise.”
Indeed, Wayne has spoken about his battle with alcohol in the past. In September last year, the Manchester United legend said he could have died if Coleen hadn’t been there to help him. Speaking on close friend and former teammate Rio Ferdinand’s podcast, Wayne said: “I honestly believe if she weren’t there, I’d be dead.”

Talking to Rio, Wayne continued: “Coleen is the best. I’ve made mistakes in the past which are well-documented but… she keeps me on [the right] path and she’s done it for 20-odd years.”
And this has been reflected by the friends today following the new pictures. Speaking to the Daily Mail, the insiders have stressed Wayne, who scored more than 50 goals for England, “did nothing wrong” at the party.
They added Coleen, a media personality, has supported her husband throughout his alcoholism journey. Indeed, whenever Coleen is asked publicly about her relationship with Wayne, she has the defiant answer: “We’ve had our ups and we’ve had our downs but we’ve had experiences that you would never have imagined.”
Just two days after the photographs of Wayne emerged, Coleen was spotted out and about in Cheshire without her wedding ring. However, friends say she never wears her ring to Pilates or gym sessions and there was nothing unusual about her having left it at home.
Mum-of-four Coleen came runner-up on 2024’s I’m a Celebrity… Get Me Out of Here! She sobbed happy tears of joy as she told her sons “I’ve missed you so much” during a surprise jungle reunion. Coleen wasted no time at all giving her mum and two boys a tour of the camp, including her bed and the dunny as well as the Bush Telegraph, with her youngest son trying on her jungle hat.
