Millie Gibson was suffering with ‘abnormal’ stomach pain after having no prior symptoms, so was shocked to find she was diagnosed with a serious and painful health condition
Former Coronation Street actress Millie Gibson has been scheduled for emergency surgery after being rushed to A&E with “abnormal stomach pain”. The 21-year-old, who portrayed Kelly Neelan on Corrie, issued a warning to fans, urging them to be in tune with what’s happening in their bodies.
Millie, who was on the cobbles as Kelly from 2019 to 2022, shared her ordeal with her fans on Instagram Stories. She wrote: “Hi all, I don’t usually post things like this but I just thought it was important to share awareness.
“On Thursday afternoon I went to a&e with abnormal stomach pain not knowing what it was. The doctors diagnosed me with appendicitis later that evening and organised surgery for the morning.

She added: “I’ve never had a health scare like this and if it wasn’t for someone’s advice pushing me to go to A&E my appendix would have ruptured. I had no prior symptoms, it came on in the space of an hour”. She urged fans: “Listen to your bodies.” Millie signed off with a love heart emoji.
According to the NHS, appendicitis is swelling and infection of the appendix, which is a part of the bowel. It usually causes pain in the lower right side of the abdomen and needs to be treated urgently in hospital.
Symptoms generally begin with pain in the middle of the abdomen, around the belly button. A few hours later it will move to the lower right and become more severe. Once operated on, Millie can expect to be home within 1-2 days, as long as there are no complications.
Millie started on Coronation Street when she was just 14, but has since gone on to play parts in Doctor Who (2023) and more recently, The Forsytes (2025). She landed her role in the remake of John Galsworthy’s Forstye Saga, at a “very needed time” after her abrupt exit from Doctor Who in 2024.
She was cast as red-haired Forsyte wife Irene Heron in the third TV adaptation of the books by John Galsworthy, a role for which she said she would be “forever grateful.” The launch of the costume drama took place last year, with two full series filmed for Five.”
Millie said at the time: “It’s totally gruelling but totally worth it. It came to me at a very needed time and I fell completely in love with it. I fell in love with the cast, I fell in love with the crew and with [producer/director] Meenu [Gaur]. I will forever be grateful for it.”
Despite claims that she had been axed from Doctor Who for being a “diva”, Millie was actually cast for the next series. Speaking to The i Paper, Millie didn’t respond to claims because she didn’t want to spoil the upcoming storylines.
She said: “I couldn’t be like, ‘It’s a lie!’ [because] they’d be like, ‘Well, that’s spoilers’. It was quite hard to stand up for myself without ruining the show. I was like, ‘Oh, this is horrific because it just looks like it’s true.’”
People she was close to in real life also believed the rumours, with Millie adding: “It was awful. What was frustrating was the amount of people that were like, ‘Oh, sorry, this has happened mate and I was like, ‘Yeah, it’s not [happened], but thank you.’”
