Beverley Callard, famed for playing Corrie’s feisty Rovers Return landlady Liz McDonald, has been keeping her fans up to date with her treatment after being diagnosed with breast cancer

Former Coronation Street star Beverley Callard has shared a heartbreaking update following her breast cancer surgery, revealing she suffered complications in hospital. The 68-year-old, who played Rovers Return landlady Liz McDonald, admitted she sobbed when she got home, before thanking NHS staff for their care and support.

The actress revealed her diagnosis on Ireland’s Late Late Show with Patrick Kielty, telling viewers she remained “positive and strong” as she underwent treatment. She went on to share a later update with fans, admitting she had to force herself to eat and was trying to keep busy by cleaning her house constantly to distract herself.

Following the surgery, during which she had lymph nodes removed as a precaution, she took to social media to update her followers. She said: “I’m home. I was supposed to come home yesterday, but they decided to keep me in overnight.

“Minor complications. So I have been home for a couple of hours. I looked very pale, the nurses were calling me pale and passionate.

“I don’t know about passionate, but I am very pale. I’m feeling okay. I had a bit of a cry as you do, but I am okay.

“Emotions are all over the place, you know which is you know… anyway, I won’t rant on about that. The staff at Norfolk And Norwich Hospital were truly amazing.

“And wait for this, who needs Louis Vuitton? Josh, one of the nurses, his nan makes these to keep the drain bottle in, I won’t go any further than that.

“But it’s the handiest thing ever. So I’m just telling you, I will update you tomorrow.”

Beverley, who has landed a role in Irish soap Fair City, confirmed her breast cancer was caught in the “early stages”, saying she would need radiotherapy as part of her care plan. The defiant star faced the disease before, having been diagnosed with cervical cancer aged just 32, and is determined to “beat it” again, as she did in the past.

The soap star has been keeping her fans updated, sharing a video on Instagram on Friday in which she revealed she was getting prepped for surgery. She said: “Update for anyone else who is about to go through it. I’m at the hospital, it’s the big day, which I’m glad about. I’m ready, I’m strong, I feel fine. [Her husband] Jon’s had to go home, they sent him home.

“There’s a few other ladies here with me, we’ve had a chat. They’ve been in and drawn all over me and then I have to go for an injection in an hour and then the anaesthetist came in, Peter. I’m feeling OK.

“Sometimes, you get these self-indulgent feelings and vanity but I’m not alone. This other lady said she’s the same.

“I keep thinking, will I be lopsided? What will I wear? But I’m really good, I’m really strong and I’ll let you know how it goes.”

On Thursday, Beverley wrote that she would be having lymph nodes removed as a precaution, although her medical team were “pretty sure” that it hadn’t spread to them. She added: “It’s quite a big operation I’m having, but I trust them completely. I have to tell you about the Norfolk and Norwich Hospital all NHS, obviously and they are truly amazing…

“They spent ages with me and with every other patient as well. And what is great is you can sit there chatting to other people who are going through what you are going through and obviously, some of them are in a far worse position than me…

“So I thank my lucky stars. The world is full of really strong women, that is for sure. So go tomorrow to get through.

“The waiting is the worst bit, I have to tell you. The house is so clean because I can’t stop thinking about things.

“So one more day tomorrow and then it’s the operation. But I’m feeling strong and positive. And let me know if you are going through it and how you’re feeling… Truly, your stories mean a great deal to me.”
