Coronation Street legend Beverley Callard has issued a positive update amid her cancer treatment and has marked a major milestone following her initial operation

Coronation Street legend Beverley Callard has issued a positive update amid her cancer treatment. The soap legend, who played Liz McDonald on the ITV programme on and off for 30 years, revealed last month that she had been diagnosed with the early stages of breast cancer and recently underwent her first bout of surgery.

But on Wednesday evening, the actress, 68, who has been married to Jon McEwan since 2010, shared the news that she doesn’t need to undergo a second operation and is hopeful that in a matter of weeks, she will be declared cancer-free.

She said: “Well, today has been a great day. I got to the hospital at 9am. Jon came in with me because, if you remember, last week I really didn’t want him to come in when they took the dressings off for the first time. Anyway, I saw my consultant, who was truly amazing, and she says I do not need to have the second operation. I’ve still got the massive swelling under my arm, it’s about three inches long and one and half inches wide.

“But as opposed to being rock hard, it’s begun to soften so they said it’s turning into fluid now so it will slowly just release into my system and then out of my system so I’m really thrilled about that. So, the next stage, is, in about four weeks, we will find out if she managed to get all the cancer out and we’ll also get the results of whether it was in the lymph nodes or not.

“If I’m cancer-free, then, a few weeks after that, I will begin radiotherapy. If I’m not cancer-free, then we’ll cross that bridge when we get to it. But I have a feeling I will be. I don’t why I have that feeling but I just have.”

Beverley, who also starred in Two Pints of Lager and a Packet of Crisps, had just started working on Irish soap Fair City when she got the call about her diagnosis. She had to jet home to the UK but is now looking forward to returning to the set within the coming days, and celebrated the news by getting Botox and attending a hair appointment.

Speaking to her Instagram followers, she added: “So it means that I will be doing all the PR stuff in London on Sunday and Monday, come back Tuesday.

“Then on Thursday, I go back to Dublin and Saturday I begin working on Fair City again. I am dying for my scripts to come – I can’t wait! This afternoon, I went and had my roots done and Botox.

“Do you know what? Any woman who is going through this – we are all f****** warriors and I hope you get good news as well. Please keep on sending me your messages and I will try and reply to everyone. I wish everybody so much love, let’s keep going!”

The star recently explained that she was preparing to go on a red carpet for the first time since her diagnosis and was more nervous than usual under the circumstances.

She said: “I love my job, I love learning lines, I love creating a character but standing posing on a red carpet is my worst nightmare. But now [it’s] even worse because I feel lopsided.

“I’ve just had to have a lady come to alter a dress that I’m thinking about wearing, and try and disguise what I’m going through at the moment so I’m even more nervous about it.”
