Cristian Romero lashed out at the club after a disappointing end to the transfer window for Tottenham
Captain Cristian Romero has been “dealt with internally” after describing Tottenham’s lack of squad depth as “disgraceful”.
The Argentina defender made the claim after a quiet deadline day at Spurs, and 24 hours after they came from 2-0 down to draw 2-2 with Manchester City last Sunday.
Romero was forced off at half-time due to illness against Pep Guardiola’s men but wrote on Instagram: “Great effort from all my team-mates yesterday, they were incredible. I wanted to be available to help them even though I wasn’t feeling well, especially since we only had 11 players available – unbelievable but true and disgraceful.”
It is not the first time Romero has used social media to attack the club and Frank, speaking ahead of Saturday’s trip to Manchester United, said he would have taken a different approach.
The Dane said: “I think if you want to know what he meant you have to ask him, that’s the right way to answer that question. Cuti [Romero] is a very passionate person and leaves everything on the pitch. He wants to win every time and there can be an outburst. It is something we have dealt with and dealt with internally.
“There is a way of doing things. I wouldn’t have done it. This is my message.
“The beauty of written text is that you can read into it and the only person who knows what it meant was Cuti. I think it shows that Cuti is extremely passionate. He wants to do everything he can with his team-mates to achieve great things.”
Romero set to be fit for Tottenham at Old Trafford
Romero’s actions were an unwanted distraction for Frank and detracted from what was a stirring comeback against City.
He is expected to be fit for the lunchtime clash at Old Trafford in two days’ time and could resume his central defensive partnership with Micky van de Ven.
Frank said: “Micky is good, he trained today. He’s available for selection for Saturday. So it’s good.
“Djed [Spence] is getting closer. It’s a little bit touch and go but there’s a good chance that he could be ready.”
Spurs will head north for a rematch of last season’s Europa League final in 14th place, nine points above the relegation zone. They haven’t won in the Premier League since December 28.
