This was the day after Christmas and Justin Fields was walking through the Jets locker room three days after the team put him on injured reserve, ending his one season with the Jets.
Fields walked toward a white, electric dirt bike that was parked near his locker, just to the side of the team’s equipment room. He hopped on the bike, a Secret Santa present from a teammate, and revved the engine. The wheels suddenly spun and the bike bucked out of Fields’ control and into the thick wood panel on the side of his locker.
This was a perfect metaphor for Fields’ time with the Jets. It looked like it was going to get off to a good start. Then it crashed quickly. No one was hurt and there was not much damage done other than a hole in the carpet and a scratch on the locker.
Fields’ time with the Jets came to an end on Monday when the team traded him to the Chiefs. In the grand scheme of quarterback miscues by the Jets, Fields ranks low on the list and his time here barely will be remembered.
