Todd Meadows, who was one of the newest recruits to the show Deadliest Catch, lost his life while filming at just 25 and now tragic details have emerged about what happened
Heartbreaking new details regarding the death of Todd Meadows, a deckhand on the fishing vessel featured on reality TV show Deadliest Catch, have been revealed.
Deadliest Catch’s newest star Todd, 25, died after he fell overboard in freezing water and was rescued 10 minutes later, while filming the popular Discovery Channel series.
A spokesperson for the US Coast Guard said that on February 25, just after 5pm local time, officials were alerted that Meadows had gone overboard – the alarm raised by fishing vessel Aleutian Lady, which reported he fell into the water about 170 miles north of Dutch Harbor, near Alaska.

Crew members were able to pull him from the water some ten minutes later but sadly, he was unresponsive and attempts to resuscitate him were in vain. His body was then transported by crew to Dutch Harbor.
The Coast Guard confirmed it is investigating the incident, as it does with all marine casualties and accidents, to determine the cause and identify any necessary corrective actions.
The tragic incident took place in the Bering Sea which is known for its shallow depth, unpredictable weather and devastatingly cold temperatures – making it one of the most perilous bodies of water in the world.
Meadow’s death was announced by heartbroken Captain Rick Shelford in a Facebook post, as he called February 25 “the most tragic day in the history of the Aleutian Lady on the Bering Sea.”
He wrote in the poignant post, “We lost our brother, Todd Meadows. Todd was the newest member of our crew, he quickly became family. His love for fishing and his strong work ethic earned everyone’s respect right away.
“His smile was contagious, and the sound of his laughter coming up the wheelhouse stairs or over the deck hailer is something we will carry with us always. Our hearts are broken in a way that words can’t fully express.”
In a separate tribute, the Captain penned: “Todd’s love for his children, his family, and his life was evident in everything he did. He worked hard, loved deeply, and brought joy to those around him.” He asked fans to “lift Todd’s children and family in prayer and keep them in your thoughts as they face the days ahead without him.”
He ended his post with the words, “Todd will forever be part of this boat, this crew, and this brotherhood. Though we lost him far too soon, his legacy will live on through his children and in every memory we carry of him. Rest easy brother, till we meet again.” A GoFundMe page has been set up in Meadows’ name, and a family member who set it up said that any donations would “help support his three boys, assist with funeral expenses, and help ease the financial burden in the months ahead.”
Discovery Channel said in a statement: “We are deeply saddened by the tragic passing of Todd Meadows. This is a devastating loss, and our hearts are with his loved ones, his crewmates and the entire fishing community during this incredibly difficult time.”
It’s been reported that producers of the show have been informed and are offering resources to help others cope with the loss, though it’s unclear whether the tragic moment was captured on film. Deadliest Catch, which first aired in 2005, explores the fishing crews tackling the life-threatening conditions on the Bering Sea – and sadly, this is not the first time tragedy has struck its stars.
Over the years, various cast members have lost their lives – including Captain Phil Harris, who died at 53 in 2010 after suffering a stroke while he was unloading his boat. In 2024, longtime cast member Nick Mavar died suddenly at 59.
And in 2020, Nick McGlashan was found dead in a hotel room at 33, following a long battle with drugs and alcohol addiction. An autopsy later determined he died of an overdose of “meth, cocaine, and fentanyl.”
