The NSW government has reached an agreement with private operator Healthscope and receivers to bring Northern Beaches Hospital under government control, costing taxpayers $190 million, Premier Chris Minns announced on Tuesday morning.
Minns told Ben Fordham on 2GB that the deal would mean the hospital’s 400 public beds would be integrated back into the public hospital system in 2026.

The public services at the hospital are currently operated by Healthscope, which went into receivership in May.
The hospital has been under intense scrutiny since the death of two-year-old Joe Massa last year, which led to “Joe’s law”, which bans future public-private partnerships in hospitals.
“The original contract was for $900 million,” Minns said.
“Not only will future hospitals not go into private hands, but we will bring back this private, private emergency department into the NSW government system,” Minns said.
Minns said the transition would likely occur in mid-2026, “when we can integrate all of the staffing as well as … all the backend logistics and processes inside that hospital into our public system because we have to make them consistent with … all the other major hospitals across NSW”.
