Serious restrictions in train travel between Hamburg and Berlin as well as Hamburg and Hanover were in place on Wednesday morning due to a damaged overhead line.

There were train cancellations and delays on the Hamburg-Berlin and Hamburg-Hanover railway lines on Wednesday morning.

According to Deutsche Bahn, several long-distance ICE connections were cancelled, and transport in Lower Saxony with Metronom, a regional railway company, was also affected.

Long-distance traffic disruptions

According to DB, the following restrictions were in place as of Wednesday morning:

  • ICEs between Berlin and Hamburg via Stendal, Salzwedel and Uelzen are cancelled.
  • ICEs between Hamburg and Munich via Berlin, Leipzig, Erfurt and Nuremberg are cancelled between Hamburg and Berlin.
  • ICEs between Hamburg and Munich via Hanover, Kassel, Fulda, Würzburg and Nuremberg are cancelled between Hamburg and Hanover.
  • All other ICE/IC trains between Hamburg and Hanover will be diverted and delayed by about 30 minutes. The Lüneburg, Uelzen and Celle stops will be cancelled.

According to German media reports, Deutsche Bahn said staff were working under high pressure to deal with the disruptions, and that disruptions were expected to be taken care of within the morning.

Metronom announced that the line had been completely closed on Monday evening. An emergency bus service was set up. Since early Wednesday morning, the line was to be reopened on at least one track. However, there are still individual partial cancellations and delays.

According to Metronom, damage to the overhead line has already led to line closures and train cancellations on the important connection between Hamburg and Hanover several times in recent months.
