In the glitzy and glamorous world of Bollywood, there are many actors who come and go, but there are some rare gems whose charisma remains untouched and who continue to captivate fans across generations. One such example of this is the legendary Dharmendra. Besides being known as the “He-Man” of Bollywood, he also stands as one of the most respectable stars in the industry.
The Party Incident With Sanjay Khan
Recalling an old incident, Dharmendra once attended a party with actor Sanjay Khan, his co-star from the 1965 film Haqeeqat. Sanjay, who was a newcomer at the time, had hosted a small gathering for the film’s cast and crew to mingle. However, as per reports, Sanjay had consumed alcohol and began speaking ill of actors in the industry. Initially, Dharmendra tried to calm him down with affection and advice, asking him to stop. The article reads, “Dharmendra tolerated it and kept telling him with love, making him understand that he should not talk all this.” But soon this situation went out of hand, and Sanjay began bad-mouthing veteran actor Om Prakash, with whom Dharmendra shared a deep bond after working together in Chupke Chupke. Unable to bear the disrespect, “Dharmendra couldn’t tolerate it and slapped him.”
Feroz Khan’s Reaction and Dharmendra’s Regret
Later, Dharmendra felt guilty for his action and visited Sanjay’s brother, Feroz Khan, to apologise. However, Feroz defended him, saying, “He should be punished for his actions. You did it right. If I were in your place, I would have done the same.”
Dharmendra and Sanjay’s Reunion
But what happened later spoke about their deep bond and friendship. Years later, Sanjay Khan suffered severe injuries during the tragic fire accident on the sets of Tipu Sultan. The incident led to the loss of 52 lives. One hearing this news, Dharmendra rushed to visit Sanjay at the hospital and was moved to tears.
Mentioning this incident in his autobiography, The Best Mistakes of My Life, Sanjay wrote, “Two months after I came back from coma, I saw a stream of VIPs from Delhi and Dharmendra. Those people were watching me with pathetic looks… But Dharmendra was crying like a boy. He kept on saying, ‘My friend, I’m with you.’”
Sanjay added, “That was the friendship I shared with him. I shared an extremely long and close friendship with Raj Kapoor and Sanjeev Kumar, among others.”
A Bond of Respect and Emotion
From standing up for his mentor to crying for his friend’s pain, Dharmendra proved that beneath the tough exterior of Bollywood’s He-Man lies a heart full of love, loyalty, and unshakable friendship.
