Dhurandhar: Ranveer Singh’s film faces heat as Chaudhary Aslam’s wife objects to...

Ranveer Singh’s Dhurandhar may be drawing strong numbers at the ticket window, but the film has run into a fresh storm across the border. The biographical portions of the movie, which feature Sanjay Dutt as late Pakistani police officer SP Chaudhary Aslam, have upset Aslam’s family, especially his wife, Noreen Aslam.

Speaking on Dialogue Pakistan’s podcast, Noreen shared that her late husband had admired Sanjay Dutt since the Khalnayak days and always believed the actor commanded a larger-than-life screen presence. Naturally, she expected dignity and accuracy in how Aslam would be shown. Instead, she says she was left “deeply disturbed” after watching the film’s trailer.

A line in the trailer refers to Aslam as “the offspring of the devil and a djinn.” For Noreen, this was more than a creative exaggeration. Calling the remark “hurtful and unnecessary,” she said, “We are Muslims. Such words disrespect not just Aslam but also his mother, a simple, honest woman. If my husband is shown wrongly or used for propaganda, I will pursue all legal options. Sadly, Indian filmmakers find no other subjects but to portray Pakistan negatively.”

Who was Chaudhary Aslam?

Chaudhary Aslam, born in 1963, was one of Pakistan’s most recognised police officers. Joining the Sindh Police in the 1980s, he served across multiple regions before becoming a key figure in Karachi’s crime-fighting operations.

In the 2000s, he led the Lyari Task Force, which played a crucial role in cracking down on Karachi’s entrenched gang networks. His confrontational style made him both feared and admired. Though he survived an attack by the Taliban in 2011, he was assassinated in 2014 in a strike claimed by the TTP.

About Dhurandhar

Aditya Dhar’s Dhurandhar is loosely inspired by real events linked to Operation Lyari, a long covert crackdown in Karachi’s gang-controlled zones. The film weaves a semi-fictional narrative around India’s covert involvement in counter-terror operations. Ranveer Singh leads the cast as an undercover spy, while Sanjay Dutt, Akshaye Khanna, R Madhavan, Arjun Rampal and Sara Arjun play key roles.

The film had already seen friction before release, after the family of Ashoka Chakra awardee Major Mohit Sharma sought a stay, claiming the script drew from his life without permission. The Delhi High Court eventually cleared the film for release on December 1, 2025.

Despite mixed reviews, Dhurandhar has started strong, earning Rs 104 crore net in its opening weekend, while the controversy around Aslam’s portrayal continues to grow.
