Dodgers’ Opening Day lineup features sentimental surprise

When the Dodgers announced their Opening Day lineup Thursday afternoon, it included one sentimental surprise.

Typically, World Series hero Miguel Rojas will not start against right-handed pitching this year, set to platoon at second base base with switch-hitting Alex Freeland.

Yet, even with the Dodgers facing Arizona right Zac Gallen in Thursday’s opener, Rojas got the nod from manager Dave Roberts.

One last Opening Day start, for a 13-year MLB veteran who is retiring at the end of this season.

“During our last exhibition game against the Angels [on Tuesday], I was on the bench next to him, and he called me over and he said, ‘You’re starting Thursday,’” Rojas recounted before Thursday’s game, in which he will play second and bat ninth. “I was speechless and just gave him a big hug … Having that opportunity to be in the starting lineup means a lot.”

Rojas might’ve been in line for a ceremonial Opening Day start anyway, given his heroics in last year’s World Series.

But being able to start the first game of his final year resonated even deeper emotionally.

“He was pretty emotional, pretty excited, pretty reflective,” Roberts said with a smile.

“To be honest with you,” Rojas added, “I couldn’t stop crying yesterday and this morning.

“It’s going to be my last dance. I just want to enjoy it as much as I can.”

The Dodgers’ opening lineup didn’t feature any other surprises.

Shohei Ohtani was leading off, followed by fellow superstars Kyle Tucker (making his Dodgers debut), Mookie Betts, Freddie Freeman and Will Smith.

Yoshinobu Yamamoto will be on the mound, making his second consecutive Opening Day start for the team.
