Grateful Dead’s Donna Jean Godchaux has died. The musician, who also worked with Elvis Presley and Cher, had been battling a “lengthy struggle with cancer”.

A representative for the late star confirmed that she died on November 2 at a hospice in Nashville. Dennis McNally said: “She was a sweet and warmly beautiful spirit, and all those who knew her are united in loss. The family requests privacy at this time of grieving.

“In the words of Dead lyricist Robert Hunter, ‘May the four winds blow her safely home.'” Donna was known for her work with the band Grateful Dead between 1971 and 1979 before she departed, having worked on records such as What a Long Strange Trip It’s Been and Wake From the Flood.

She had also worked as a backup singer for the late Elvis, with her vocals appearing on his legendary track Suspicious Minds, as well as Percy Sledge’s When A Man Loves A Woman.

Donna also featured on songs recorded by some of the biggest musicians, including Cher, Neil Diamond, Boz Scaggs and Duane Allman.
