Pop sensation Dua Lipa brought out an indie legend at a recent show, with many praising the Levitating hitmaker for bringing out a rock legend and introducing him to new fans

An indie legend made a surprise appearance at a Dua Lipa show last week, delighting fans of both the pop sensation and alternative music. The appearance has been hailed by many as the latest in a continuing trend of chart-topping artists bringing legendary musicians who influenced them up on stage.

Dua Lipa did just that during a performance in Seattle, during which she brought up an influential star for a performance of a Death Cab for Cutie song. The veteran rock band has been making hits since 1997 and the recent appearance from one of the band’s members has left fans of the group and Dua Lipa stunned.

One fan could not believe it when Ben Gibbard joined the pop star on stage.

The fan wrote: “This might be the first time I’ve seen a photo of him without bangs and he’s almost unrecognisable.”

Another responded: “He runs those insane ultramarathons now I believe, he looks like a different person than he did in the early 2000s.”

Gibbard completed a 100-mile ultramarathon earlier this year, finishing after running through the night with heat stroke. His appearance at the Dua Lipa gig saw him perform I Will Follow you Into the Dark.

Fans have since praised the Levitating hitmaker as having a “good taste” in music after bringing the indie rock legend up on stage. One person wrote: “Everything is better with Ben Gibbard. Props to Dua Lipa for having good taste.”

Another added: “Pretty decent cover. It’s a sweet but really safe song to play. Good way to pop the crowd, though.” A third shared: “Super sweet duet, great song. I love Ben so much.”

Others were left praising the likes of Olivia Rodrigo and Kacey Musgraves for bringing out legendary songwriters during their shows.

One person wrote: “I like that some of these pop artists are using their fame as an excuse to perform with some of their favourite artists, because I would absolutely do the same.

“Same with Olivia Rodrigo having brought both David Byrne and Robert Smith on stage.” Another agreed, adding that Rodrigo bringing up on stage the likes of Rivers Cuomo from Weezer and Byrne from Talking Heads is introducing new audiences to great music.

The fan wrote: “Olivia’s my favourite of the current pop girls mainly because she did that. I wonder how many young people ended up becoming fans of The Cure or Talking Heads or Weezer because of her giving them respect like that.”

Another wrote: “Kacey Musgraves and John Prine.” A third shared how Chappell Roan had brought up Nancy Wilson from Heart for a handful of performances.
