One of EastEnders‘ greatest ever characters will soon be prowling around Albert Square once more. Ross Kemp has confirmed he is to return to the role of Grant Mitchell this spring – but not for long.

The actor, 61, first played Grant – the younger and more volatile of the two Mitchell brothers – in 1990 and quickly became one of the best-known stars on the show and TV as a whole.

His return will be part of Nigel Bates‘ ongoing dementia storyline, which he said “holds deep personal meaning for me”. He also tackled the topic of dementia in his 2019 series Ross Kemp: Living With.

Speaking last night, the actor said: “I’m truly delighted to be stepping back into Grant Mitchell’s shoes and returning to EastEnders later this year. As well as exploring Grant’s attempts to reconnect with his son Mark, it’s especially an honour to be part of Nigel’s powerful ongoing dementia storyline, which holds deep personal meaning for me due to a close family connection in real life”.

The character – last seen in February 2025 when Nigel raised concerns about Phil’s mental health – will be called upon by his estranged son Mark, played by Stephen Aaron-Sipple, to return to the Square.

EastEnders executive producer Ben Wadey said: “We are absolutely thrilled to welcome Ross back once more to the legendary role of Grant. The Mitchells remain one of EastEnders’ defining dynasties, and we can’t wait to see them reunited again. As always when Grant is around, drama inevitably follows him…”

Grant was last seen on EastEnders almost exactly a year ago for the soap’s 40th anniversary episodes. He has been living in Portugal ever since.
