Ed Sheeran has given an update on his wife Cherry after the mum-of-two had a cancerous tumour removed from her arm, which was diagnosed when she was six months pregnant
Ed Sheeran has given fans an update on his wife Cherry after the mum-of-two was given a devastating cancer diagnosis while she was six months pregnant with the couple’s second child. The Shape Of You singer admitted the day he found out was “one of the worst days”, with the fact she was pregnant meaning she had to wait until the birth to start treatment.
It marked a week that saw Ed, 35, also lose his close friends Jamal Edwards and Shane Warne. He also had the first day of his court case in which he was accused of plagiarising his multi-award winning, record-breaking song Shape of You.

Speaking on US podcast Friends Keep Secrets, Ed told hosts Benny Blanco, Lil Dicky and Kristin Batalucco about the “worst week” he had. He revealed: “The day Cherry rung me up and said that she had cancer, that was probably one of the worst days.
“That was probably the worst week because Jamal [Edwards] died that week as well and then we went straight into the court case. And then Shane [Warne] died – the first day of court.”

Speaking about Cherry’s health, after the tumour in her arm was successfully removed, he updated fans, saying: “She’s fine, I mean she had the operation. She was pregnant at the time so that why it was difficult.”
Ed added: “She had the operation to remove the tumour after she’d given birth to our second child. Thankfully, touch wood, totally fine, adding: “It was f***ing scary.”
Cherry went on to give birth to their second baby Jupiter in May 2022, after their first daughter Lyra Antarctica was born in August 2020. Ed went on to tell the podcasters: “Everything was building to that for eight years and then suddenly, when you’re in the courtroom, it didn’t really matter.
“I’d built it up in my mind and then because of all those actual heavy life things happened, as soon as I was in the courtroom, I was like, I don’t actually care about the outcome of this, because it’s so small compared…”
Musicians Sami Chokri and Ross O’Donoghue argued Ed had copied their 2015 song Oh Why. But judge Mr Justice Zacaroli concluded that Sheeran “neither deliberately nor subconsciously” plagiarised a phrase from their song, and that while there were similarities, there are significant differences between the two songs.
Ed responded to the trial, stating: ““Claims like this are way too common now and have become a culture where a claim is made with the idea that a settlement will be cheaper than taking it to court, even if there is no basis for the claim, and it’s really damaging to the songwriting industry.”
Speaking in his 2023 documentary, The Sum of It All, emotional scenes saw Ed sob as he recalls the traumatic period of his life. At the time of Cherry’s diagnosis, in order to cope with his fears, the singer-songwriter managed to get his feelings down on paper – the lyrics that went on to form tracks on his album Subtract.
Cherry said: “We had the diagnosis of the tumour and the next day Eds went down into the basement and wrote seven songs in four hours. Some people write a diary and get their emotions out through the pen and for Eds, if something really intense happens, he’ll go and write a song.”
