Ferencvaros continued its winning streak in the Hungarian League, beating Vasas in the derby 15:9.
However, a major piece of news from the 13th round came from Szolnok. Eger surprisingly defeated Szolnok 13:12.
With the victory in Szolnok, Eger secured a spot in an “upper house”. After the 13th round, the 14 participating teams will be split into two groups. The top 8 teams will battle for the title and the spots in the European cups for the season 2026/27. The remaining six teams, along with the top two from the Second League, will play in the relegation group.
Eger finished the first half in 8th place, with 17 points, four more than 9th-placed Debrecen. However, if Eger had not beaten Szolnok, it would still have to fight for a spot in the upper group. There is a special rule that says: If the point difference between the 8th- and 9th-placed teams is 3 points or less, they will play a playoff to determine which team advances to the upper division. Therefore, Eger was saved from having to participate in the additional playoffs by just one point.
Eger led for most of the match in Szolnok. It took an early 2:0 lead and maintained a 2-goal difference until 8:6. Between the 15th and 20th minutes, Szolnok controlled the game and came back from 6:8 deficit to 10:8. But, Eger responded in the same manner, scoring four straight goals, and regained a 2-goal lead (10:8). Midway through the fourth period, Eger increased its lead to 13:9. Szolnok reduced the gap with three late goals, but failed to equalize.
Gabor Szalai contributed four goals to Eger’s 13:12 win.
As for the derby in Budapest, Ferencvaros dictated the pace from the early stages of the game. A 4:0 run in the first 11 minutes put the reigning champion on the right track. Vasas reduced the gap to three goals on a few occasions. For the last time, Vasas did it late into the third quarter – 7:10. But, Ferencvaros replied with three straight goals, jumped to 13:7 and maintained a six-goal difference until the end. Vince Varga was the top scorer with five goals in a 15:9 win. Dusan Mandic, Akos Nagy and Vendel Vigvari added two each. Bence Batori scored four for Vasas.
Honved will enter the 2nd half of the regular season as 2nd-placed. It recorded two wins this week. First, it beat Debrecen 17:12 in a postponed match of the 12th round. In the 13th round, Honved was too strong for UVSE. Nikolai Moskov scored six goals in a 24:10 victory.
Third-placed BVSC beat Debrecen 15:11. Nika Shushiashvili made the difference by scoring four goals.
Both Honved and BVSC will have a significant advantage ahead of 4th-placed Vasas before the second part of the league
