The Election Commission of India is expected to announce the schedule for assembly elections in several states and one Union Territory on Sunday.

The poll body has called a press conference at 4 pm where the election dates are likely to be revealed.

Elections Due In 5 States/UTs

Assembly elections are scheduled to take place in West Bengal, Kerala, Tamil Nadu, Assam and the Union Territory of Puducherry.

Authorities have already completed the special intensive revision of electoral rolls in these regions, and the final voters’ lists have been published ahead of the announcement.

EC Reviews Poll Preparedness

Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar, along with Election Commissioners Sukhbir Singh Sandhu and Vivek Joshi, visited several poll-bound states earlier this month to assess preparations.

The commission also conducted a review meeting in West Bengal on March 10 to evaluate the state’s readiness for the upcoming elections.

Key Contests Across States

In West Bengal, elections will be held for 294 seats, with the main contest expected between the ruling All India Trinamool Congress led by Mamata Banerjee and the Bharatiya Janata Party. The Trinamool Congress has governed the state since 2011.

Assam will vote for 126 assembly seats, where the BJP-led National Democratic Alliance is set to face the Indian National Congress.

In Kerala, the primary contest is expected between the Left Democratic Front and the United Democratic Front for 140 seats. The BJP-led National Democratic Alliance is also in the race and is expected to contest around 100 seats, with allies Bharat Dharma Jana Sena and Twenty20 Party likely contesting the remaining seats.

For the 234-seat assembly in Tamil Nadu, political parties are intensifying their campaigns while finalising seat-sharing arrangements within alliances.

Meanwhile, Puducherry will elect members for all 30 constituencies of its 16th Legislative Assembly. The Indian National Congress is contesting in alliance with the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam and Communist Party of India. The opposition bloc includes the All India NR Congress, Bharatiya Janata Party and All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam.

The Election Commission said it has appointed central observers under Article 324 of the Constitution and Section 20B of the Representation of the People Act, 1951. These officials will assist the commission in ensuring the smooth conduct of free and fair elections and oversee the electoral process at the ground level.
