Eli Manning had some fun with the messy college coaching drama involving Lane Kiffin.
Taking to X on Sunday, the same day Kiffin announced his Ole Miss departure for LSU, the Giants and Rebels legend responded to a post shared the night before by the parody account 247Sport that read: “JUST IN: Ole Miss has announced that if Lane Kiffin departs for LSU, former Rebels QB and NFL legend Eli Manning will take over as head coach.”
“‘Coach Manning’ has a night ring to it,” Manning wrote in a cheeky reply.
The two-time Super Bowl winner played for Ole Miss from 2000 to 2003.
Despite the humorous report, Manning, 44, won’t be the one tasked with leading the No. 7-ranked Rebels into the College Football Playoff.
Ole Miss has officially elevated defensive coordinator Pete Golding to the team’s permanent head coach, the program announced shortly after Kiffin, 50, made his decision official Sunday.
“After a lot of prayer and time spent with family, I made the difficult decision to accept the head coaching position at LSU,” Kiffin posted to X on Sunday.
Kiffin, who had been at the helm for the Rebels since 2020, was expected to make a decision about his future Saturday after weeks of speculation. That dragged into Sunday, with Yahoo Sports reporting the postponement of a morning meeting was “related to the university’s attempt to retain staff for the CFP run.”
In his statement, Kiffin expressed he “was hoping to complete a historic six season run with this year’s team,” but said he was shut down by Ole Miss athletic director Keith Carter.
“While I am looking forward to a new start with a unique opportunity at LSU, I will forever cherish the incredible six years I spent at Ole Miss and will be rooting hard for the team to complete their mission and bring a championship to Oxford,” Kiffin concluded his statement.
Kiffin was linked to multiple head coaching jobs outside of Oxford back in October, when Florida fired Billy Napier on Oct. 19 and LSU fired Brian Kelly a week later. Florida hired Tulane’s Jon Sumrall on Sunday.
