Actress Ella Bruccoleri is starring as Mary Bennet in the upcoming BBC period drama The Other Bennet Sister

BBC viewers are in for a treat as a new 10-part period-drama titled The Other Bennet Sister prepares to launch.

It’ll focus on the less conspicuous Mary Bennet from Jane Austen’s famous novel Pride and Prejudice.

Taking on the leading role is actress Ella Bruccoleri, who is best known for starring as Sister Frances in BBC’s Call the Midwife.

Speaking about joining the show, she told the BBC: “As someone who has always related more to Mary than Lizzy – something that was confirmed even more by reading Janice Hadlow’s brilliant novel – I feel incredibly lucky to be spending these next few months exploring her world in depth, as envisioned by these incredible women.

“Sarah Quintrell’s scripts are packed full of beautiful idiosyncratic detail, empathy, humour and such warmth. revealing that beneath Mary’s awkwardness and formality, lies a woman longing for purpose and connection.”

Ahead of the period drama airing, we’re taking a look at Ella’s life outside of her role as Mary Bennet.

Call the Midwife exit

Ella made her debut on the BBC period drama in 2018 during the annual Christmas special, although she became a series regular the following year.

Throughout her time on the show, viewers saw her character overcome many personal challenges, along with helping locate the mother of an abandoned baby and she became involved with aiding a troubled young teenage mother.

However, the actress left the period drama in 2022 as her final scenes involved Sister Frances being sent to Chichester to recuperate from a broken shoulder.

Speaking about her decision to leave the show, Ella told Radio Times it was due to other opportunities. She said: “It felt crazy quitting a great job but I’d started getting different offers, and I realised I love the variety of different things.

“When I look back at my early episodes, I’m thinking, ‘Oh, that’s not good.’ I learnt screen acting on the job, and it was invaluable.”

Unexpected career

Outside of her acting career, Ella is part of the band Marry Me Emelie!, which she formed with Yoan Segot. Ella and Yoan met on the open-mic circuit in Paris and began making music together in 2024.

The pair, who had a 13-year relationship, independently released their first single called I Have a Lark last year before their debut EP. Although it looks as though their Instagram hasn’t been active since the end of last year.

One post the band shared included an image of Ella as they captioned it: “Thank you so much for listening to our first ever EP and telling us what you think, it really does mean the world to us.

“It was born out of much sadness and tumult – confusion about how to move forward with our separate lives – we channelled a lot of into the EP and it now feels incredibly strange that people can go and listen to the deeply personal outpouring on Spotify (et al.) But YES YOU CAN”

Bridgerton role

It looks as though Ella is no stranger to starring in a period drama, as she also appeared in Netflix’s Bridgerton.

She played the role of Winifred Barragan in the third series of Shonda Rhimes’ produced show as a young woman who is making a formal entrance into society.

Sadly, her character didn’t impress Queen Charlotte at the ball and spoke to Eloise Bridgerton (Claudia Jessie), confessing she believed she had no talent.

Her character was not seen in the fourth series of the Netflix show.

The Other Bennet Sister airs on BBC One on Sunday, March 15 from 8pm
