Knowing what to believe — or what is real — on social media has never been murkier.

The latest example involves Buccaneers wide receiver Emeka Egbuka.

The 2025 first-round pick out of Ohio State said this week that the X account @EgbukaEmeka — which the Bucs’ social-media team tagged in dozens of posts throughout his rookie NFL season — does not belong to him.

The clarifications from both the team and player came immediately after the account had posted Wednesday: “Is CTE even real?”

“For anyone wondering, I haven’t had twitter since high school. That account on X isn’t me,” Egbuka wrote on Instagram, along with a laughing emoji.

“The below account is neither owned nor operated by Emeka Egbuka. It is in no way affiliated with Emeka or the Tampa Bay Buccaneers,” the team added on its official X account.

Still, according to Front Office Sports, the team’s own social media account had tagged the presumed Egbuka account — which has since been suspended by X — more than 60 times since he was drafted last year, including Happy Birthday wishes.

Soon after Twitter was sold and rebranded as X, the platform made it available for any user to have their account verified with a checkmark — thereby making it more difficult to determine which accounts are real or fake.

Egbuka finished his rookie season with 63 catches for 938 yards and six touchdowns in 17 games to place fifth in the NFL Offensive Rookie of the Year voting.
