So long, Switzerland.
That’s essentially the message ESPN reporter Holly Rowe delivered to her then-bodybuilder boyfriend after the suitor whiffed over the accolades of legendary women’s college basketball coach Pat Summitt, who coached Tennessee to eight championships across 38 years and posted 1,098-208 record.
“I had a really hot boyfriend, and he was Mr. Switzerland, a bodybuilder,” Howe recalled during a recent appearance at the Little Rock Touchdown Club, as covered by Awful Announcing.
“We dated for four years. And when I say smoking hot, and the reason we broke up was we were at the ESPYs and Pat Summitt had just gotten this award, the Arthur Ashe Courage Award, because she had just been diagnosed with early-onset Alzheimer’s. And I’m in the audience, and I’m just bawling at the ESPYs, and he asks me, ‘What’s wrong with you? She’s just a coach.’ And so we broke up. I just need you to understand I gave up Mr. Switzerland because of Pat Summitt, this is a true story.”
The ESPYs ceremony in question took place in 2012, the same year Summitt retired from coaching after being diagnosed with early-onset Alzheimer’s disease the year before.
Summit died in June 2016 at the age of 64.
During her 38-year run in Tennessee, Summitt recorded a .841 win percentage with the Lady Volunteers, also reaching the Final Four in the NCAA tournament 18 times.
She was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom from then-President Barack Obama in 2012.
As footage of Rowe’s revelation made the rounds on social media Monday, some fans weighed in on her decision to bid the bodybuilder farewell.
“You dodged a bullet. Good for you Sis!” one X user exclaimed.
“Makes sense to me,” another posted.
Holly Warlick succeeded Summitt at Tennessee and served as head coach of the Lady Volunteers from 2012-19. Kellie Harper took over in 2019, followed by Kim Caldwell in 2024.
Caldwell is currently in her second season.
