TEHRAN- The head of the Iran-China Joint Chamber of Commerce, referring to threats made about attacking energy infrastructure in the region, stated that the onset of an infrastructure war could have extensive consequences for the global energy market and the international economy.

Furthermore, any escalation of tensions in the Persian Gulf and the Strait of Hormuz would not be limited to the oil and gas sector and could impact various industrial and economic supply chains worldwide, he added.

Majid-Reza Hariri, in an interview with IRNA, commented on the potential repercussions of the threat made by Donald Trump regarding disabling Iran’s power plants, saying: “In military matters, there is typically a level of actual operations alongside a level of concealment and differing narratives. However, I consider it unlikely that such an event will occur and that an infrastructure war will seriously begin.”

He added: “The Persian Gulf region is extremely sensitive, especially in the energy sector; any action at this level could create problems for all parties involved. In response to Trump’s statements, Iran has also announced that it could target the infrastructure of Persian Gulf countries in the event of such an action.”

Hariri continued: “If this region experiences blackouts, the issue will not be limited to electricity. In such a case, production, extraction, and even transit through the Strait of Hormuz would be disrupted. Under these circumstances, all matters related to energy, oil, gas, and petrochemicals—whether raw or processed—could encounter problems, and this would present a serious challenge to the world.”

He added: “However, I consider it unlikely that such a new phase in the war will begin, because this could create a new stage in the conflict; even though the current war itself has already demonstrated new phases of warfare in the world.”

The head of the Iran-China Joint Chamber stated: “Rationality dictates that at least some of the conventional rules of war established after World War II should be observed. Although some of these rules have not been adhered to so far, it is hoped that from now on, especially in areas like vital energy infrastructure, the parties will refrain from escalating tensions; because such an action could harm the entire world.”

He emphasized: “To this day, Iran has not been the initiator of any of these stages, and all actions it has taken have been in response to the actions of the opposing side. The primary actors in this war are the United States and Israel. According to international rules, whenever one party violates military and wartime rules, the opposing party has the right to proportional defense and will not be condemned under the ethics of war; although perceptions on this matter may differ.”
