Farah Khan recently opened up about her turbulent childhood, firmly rejecting the nepo kid tag often associated with industry insiders. In a recent conversation with Ranveer Allahbadia, she revisited her family’s dramatic fall from wealth to poverty, triggered by the box office failure of her father Kamran Khan’s film, Aisa Bhi Hota Hai. Farah clarified that while her father was initially successful, his ambition led to a devastating financial collapse. Farah mentioned, “I am not a nepo kid. We became paupers. My dad died a pauper. When he died, he had Rs 30 in his pocket.”
The turning point came when her father decided to make a large-scale colour film with a bigger star, mortgaging their home and investing all his resources. Farah recalled, “It was riches to rags because my dad was doing extremely well… That one film, it released on Friday, and by Sunday, we were poor, reverse 5-6 years old.” The financial loss was followed by a difficult domestic life. Farah shared the fear she felt as a young child due to her father’s struggle with alcohol. She said, “As the sun went down, we used to start shaking because we know now anything can happen during the night after my father would hit the bottle.”
The family also dealt with the social stigma of separation during a different era. She revealed, “We could not call people at home for years. My mom had left, and we could not tell people that my parents were separated because it was a different time.” Ashamed of the situation, her father did not work for 13 years following his failure. Despite the hardships, Farah’s environment remained rooted in cinema. She explained, “Because my dad was not a successful director, so I always wanted to be a director,” adding that her childhood was all about films. She also talked about her drive to become an alpha female, mentioning that she felt sidelined when her brother, Sajid was born. She said, “In Main Hoon Na, Amrita’s character came from me because my dad wanted a son… the minute Sajid Khan was born, I was sidelined.” She recalled that the first thing she bought for herself was a fridge for Rs 4,000. Although she initially had to leave college due to poor attendance, she eventually earned her degree 3-4 years later to appease her heartbroken mother.
