Farzad B, a joint gas field shared with Saudi Arabia in the Persian Gulf, has long been cited as a symbol of Iran’s delayed development of shared fields, as the neighboring country has been producing from its side for years while Iran’s plans stalled amid policy shifts and financing challenges.
According to IRNA, the project has now entered its execution phase with the completion of a four-legged wellhead platform jacket measuring 60.2 meters in height and weighing 1,485 tons. The structure includes six drilling slots and will be installed at a water depth of about 53.7 meters, alongside a temporary drilling deck weighing 111 tons and piles with a combined weight of 976 tons.
Construction of the offshore structure began in November 2024 at the Khorramshahr yard of Iran Marine Industrial Company and was completed over roughly 15 months. Project managers said the loading operation depends on tidal conditions and is expected to take place in the coming days, after which the jacket will be transported to its installation site in the Persian Gulf.
Hamidreza Saghafi, chief executive of Petropars Group, said the project reflects a shift toward an operational, domestically driven approach after years of delay, describing the start of offshore installation works as a key milestone in safeguarding Iran’s interests in the shared field.
Officials see the move as a first step toward compensating for Iran’s historical lag in Farzad B, marking a transition from planning to on-the-ground execution in one of the country’s most strategically significant gas projects.
