A fire killed six dogs at an animal shelter of One Step Closer Animal Rescue (OSCAR) in New Jersey, United States. The fire began on Wednesday afternoon and destroyed part of the shelter.
Police and firefighters quickly arrived to help the animals and put out the fire.
The shelter was caring for around 40 dogs at the time. Many were safely evacuated with the help of local rescue partners.
“We are grateful to report that all remaining dogs are accounted for and are currently receiving care through temporary housing, foster placements, and partner rescues,” the shelter said on Thursday.
The shelter shared online that the fire made the building unsafe to use. Volunteers and rescue partners are now working to find both temporary and permanent homes for the animals that survived.
Local authorities are investigating the cause of the fire.
