A retired radio presenter who worked for LBC has warned that the fallout after Scott Mills was sacked by BBC Radio 2 following a relationship complaint will not be “pleasant”

A former breakfast radio host has warned that the fallout from Scott Mills‘ axing from BBC Radio 2 will not be “pleasant”. Steve Allen, who was one of the longest serving breakfast radio hosts on LBC, spoke out about the BBC’s decision to sack Mills on social media.

Taking to X on 30 March, the same day the BBC announced it was sacking Mills, Allen said: “I have a feeling Scott Mills is going to be front page news tomorrow morning, nobody can imagine what’s been going on, one thing for certain it’s not going to be pleasant.”

His followers agreed the sacking would be the top news for the near future. One wrote on X: “You’re right. Its already trending here.” Another added: “Definitely expect some major headlines and strong reactions tomorrow.”

Earlier on 30 March, the Mirror exclusively revealed that Mills was sacked from his role as the breakfast radio host for BBC Radio 2 following an allegation relating to his personal conduct.

The Mirror also understands the allegation relates to a historic relationship dating back more than 10 years. The 53-year-old was taken off air from his Radio 2 show last Wednesday while the BBC assessed the information. He was told his contract was terminated at the weekend, sources claim. Mills took over the flagship breakfast show from Zoe Ball in 2025.

The BBC said: “While we do not comment on matters relating to individuals, we can confirm Scott Mills is no longer contracted to work with the BBC.”

News of Mills’ axing led the 12pm bulletin on his former station BBC Radio 2. At the start of his show on BBC Radio 2, Jeremy Vine said he was “taken aback” by the news about Mills.

He said: “Obviously, I was taken aback by that opening story to the news. I had not heard anything about it until 17 minutes ago, when it was on the BBC website, and I only had the information that was given to you in the bulletin, I have nothing more, that it was allegations about Scott Mills’s personal conduct, which have led to him being sacked. I have no more than that. Alright, on to today’s show.”

While Allen no longer works for LBC, he is also no stranger to controversy. The radio host was investigated by Ofcom after he was the subject of a complaint made by the RMT union in 2015. The union complained following Allen’s comments about the London Underground strikes when he said that his audience should “beat up” tube workers.

The investigation found that his comments would not have been considered “serious encouragement” by listeners, and therefore had not breached the broadcasting code. But Ofcom did issue a warning to LBC, reminding them to be careful about allowing presenters to make inflammatory comments.

In 2018, another Ofcom investigation found that Allen had breached the Broadcasting Code after he made comments about traveller communities and another that appeared to mock a blind journalist’s guide horse.

In 2021, Ofcom received over 800 complaints after he made comments about Tilly Ramsay’s weight while she appeared on Strictly Come Dancing. Ofcom ultimately did not uphold the complaints as they said the audience should expect provocative comments from Allen.
