
Berhampore: Four West Bengal BJP workers, who travelled from Murshidabad to attend Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s rally in Nadia, were run over by a speeding train early Saturday when they were busy attending nature’s call on the railway tracks amid dense fog. Mr Modi later mourned the loss of lives.
The victims were Ramprasad Ghosh (74), Muktipada Sutradhar (55), Gopinath Das (35) and Bhairab Ghosh (47). Another BJP worker, Bikash Ghosh, was also injured in the incident. He has been admitted to hospital. The incident took place between Badkulla and Taherpur at around 5.15 am.
The five party workers were attending nature’s call on the railway tracks amid a dense fog. They were however unaware of Down Krishnanagar Local coming towards them and were knocked down. Three of them were killed on spot while another succumbed to injuries at a hospital later.
The group of five were from Sabaldaha and Masaodda villages at Burwan in Murshidabad. They had left for Taherpur at 11 pm on Friday along with others in a bus. Mr Modi said, “I came to know that some workers of BJP, on the way to the rally, fell victim to a rail accident due to bad weather. I offer my condolences to the family of those who died. I also wish speedy recovery of the injured. We are with the affected families at this time of sadness.”
Krishnanagar Trinamul Congress MP Mahua Moitra however posted on X-handle, “Terrible tragedy hushed up at altar of @narendramodi ego. @BJP4India supporters brought from far Murshidabad for PM Rally in Ranaghat today. Rally next to rail line. 4 went to answer nature’s call & were killed by 31814 Dn local train near Taherpur. BJP ignored, blacked out & went ahead with rally.”
