Strictly Come Dancing stars Gemma Atkinson and Gorka Márquez opened up about their future plans overseas, following an update on their wedding
Strictly Come Dancing star Gorka Márquez said he hopes to take a break from the UK with Gemma Atkinson when the time is right. The couple are currently based in Gemma’s hometown of Manchester, where Gorka splits his time between the city and regular visits to his native, Spain.
Opening up about their future, the pair discussed their children, Mia, six, and Thiago, two, growing up and moving on with their lives. Admitting she dreaded the thought, Gemma quoted the well-known saying: “A daughter is a daughter all your life, but a son is a son until he finds his wife.”
Reflecting on the idea, she added: “It’s true, because they [the son] bugger off.”
While Gemma admitted to fearing the day their children move on, Gorka joked that he “couldn’t wait,” as it would give him and his fiancée more freedom. “Hurry up, Thiago,” he teased on their Lost In Translation podcast.
Still stressed at the thought, the radio presenter continued: “Imagine when there’s another woman in his life other than me or it could be another man, we never know. Whoever it is, a man or woman, I don’t want you to have him.”
Sharing his contrasting thoughts, 35-year-old Gorka joked: “Even if it’s a dog, just go.”
“No, nobody’s going to be good enough for Thiago,” Gemma replied.
Putting forward his overseas plan, he added: “I can’t wait for them to be over 18, so you and I can go to Australia for three weeks.”
Later in the episode, the couple also revealed that visiting New Zealand is on their “bucket list”.
Gemma said: “We have a friend who’s from New Zealand, and the pictures she post, the scenery, I’d love to do the whale watching.”
In response, Gorka suggested they make a pact to travel to the places they’ve mentioned once their children are grown, though Gemma pointed out that New Zealand could also be fun with the kids.
“I’ve done Australia, I loved it, but I haven’t done New Zealand,” she added.
This isn’t the first time the pair have spoken about going overseas. In 2024, they revealed they were considering buying a property in Spain to act as a “home away from home”.
Gemma told The Mirror: “It would be nice to have somewhere that I can just take them with my family.
“It would help with my Spanish and theirs, and Gorka’s parents could drive down. It’s something we’re hoping to do by the end of this year. We love Spain.”
The couple are also debating whether to marry in England or in Gorka’s native, after he proposed in 2021. Whatever they decide, Gemma said the pair are not planning a big wedding.
Quizzed by a fan on Instagram last year about their plans to say “I do,” she said: “Possibly next year, we’ve been back and forth about registry offices or going to Spain.
“None of us want a big fuss or lots of guests, so we may just go and do it with just family and come back and have a huge party!”.
