Strictly Come Dancing stars Gemma Atkinson and Gorka Marquez opened up further about their future plans, having recently shared their hopes of travelling overseas
Gemma Atkinson and Gorka Marquez are eyeing up a majorly different lifestyle for when they retire. The Strictly Come Dancing stars, who got together in 2018, currently live in Gemma’s hometown of Manchester with their two children, Mia and Thiago.
While mostly based there, Gorka also makes regular trips to his native Spain for work commitments, which includes being a judge on the Spanish version of Strictly. Speaking on the latest episode of their podcast, Lost In Translation, the radio presenter opened up about her desire to leave the hustle and bustle behind for a quieter life on a farm.
This discussion came after Gorka reminisced about being surrounded by animals, such as chickens and rabbits, at his grandma’s house when he was younger.
After clarifying that he didn’t shoot them with the pellet gun he mentioned, the Strictly star said he instead shot the pegs on his grandma’s washing line.
“So then there was no pegs and she used to shout at us, ‘Where’s the pegs?!'” he laughed.
Following his admission, Gemma put forward the idea of living on a farm. She asked him: “Would you be up for one day retiring on a farm? Not a working farm, which I know there is a place for them, I do support the farmers if it’s done properly, but if we just had like a horse, maybe a miniature horse, a Shetland,” to which he replied: “No, a proper horse.”
“We can get a Shetland as well,” she added: “A few goats and a few little micro pigs.” Agreeing to the potential move, the dancer went on to suggest they also grow their own fresh food, inspired by what he saw his grandma do.
The pair discussed their retirement plan after recently expressing hopes of venturing to Australia and New Zealand once their children are older. Sharing their differing views, Gemma admitted she was dreading seeing the kids grow up and find partners, especially Thiago.
Quoting the well-known saying, she said: “A daughter is a daughter all your life, but a son is a son until he finds his wife.”
“Imagine when there’s another woman in his life other than me or it could be another man, we never know,” she added. “Whoever it is, a man or woman, I don’t want you to have him.”
In contrast, Gorka said he was excited for a bit of freedom when their children are old enough to be independent. He said of leaving the UK: “I can’t wait for them to be over 18, so you and I can go to Australia for three weeks.”
Later in the episode, the couple revealed that visiting New Zealand is on their “bucket list.” Gemma added: “We have a friend who’s from New Zealand, and the pictures she posts, the scenery, I’d love to do the whale watching.”
