Germany will deploy about 5,000 police to secure the Munich Security Conference this week, including reinforcements from neighbouring countries, officials said Wednesday.

More than 60 heads of state and government and around 100 foreign and defence ministers are among the over 1,000 delegates from 120 countries expected at the security policy talks from Friday to Sunday.

A total of 21 demonstrations – including two rallies against Iran’s government – are expected to be held in Munich during the conference, the southern city’s deputy police chief Christian Huber told a press conference.

The air space above Munich will be closed to aircraft including drones during the event, where US Secretary of State Marco Rubio is expected along with around 50 members of the US Congress.

Huber spoke of an “international police operation” to secure the event, drawing on support from France, Austria, Switzerland and the Netherlands, as German police are also busy with many carnival events nationwide.

Huber said police were expecting large crowds at a Saturday protest against the Iranian government, with demonstrators set to arrive by bus and plane from across Europe.

Opponents of the security conference itself have also registered a demonstration with up to 4,000 participants expected for Saturday.
