From T‑shirts to snow showers and back again. After a dramatic temperature swing, forecasters are hopeful spring sunshine will soon make a steady return across Germany.

Germany has experienced a bit of a weather rollercoaster this March, with near‑summer warmth at the top of the month, followed by frost, sleet and snow in some parts of the country this week.

The worst of this volatility could now be coming to end, according to Germany’s national weather service (DWD), with a more settled, spring‑like pattern taking hold.

Milder days to come

On Monday, Germany experienced what the DWD described as “classic April weather”, marked by colder temperatures, especially at higher altitudes.

Sunshine alternated with thick cloud cover, showers, sleet and stormy gusts.

Snow made a brief comeback in the country’s higher regions.

In the Alps, snowfall come down to around 800 metres, while forecasters expected accumulations of five to 10 centimetres in many places and up to 30 centimetres at higher elevations in the eastern Bavarian Alps.

The weather in Germany is expected to start improving on Monday night and into Tuesday.

Showers and thunderstorms are forecast to fade and retreat towards the south‑east, while a warm front approaches from the west, bringing milder air across much of the country.

At the same time, a high‑pressure system is expanding into Central Europe, helping to stabilise the atmosphere and reintroduce sunshine.

On Tuesday, cloud and occasional rain may linger in western regions. Eastern Germany can expect longer sunny spells.

Daytime temperatures are forecast to range from around 8C in parts of southern Bavaria to as much as 16C in the Lower Rhine, making it noticeably milder than the start of the week.

Wednesday and Thursday are expected to continue this upward trend. Despite the likelihood of cold nights with widespread frost – and lows near -5C in parts of Bavaria, Saxony and southern Brandenburg – daytime sunshine is forecast to lift temperatures to between 12 and 18C on Wednesday, and up to 19C on Thursday.
