Mumbai–Pune Expressway: In a significant infrastructure boost for the state of Maharashtra, the Mumbai-Pune Expressway is set to be expanded into a 10-lane superhighway by 2030. In the recent development, the Maharashtra State Road Development Corporation (MSRDC) is reportedly planning the massive upgradation project for the expressway so that the traffic congestion can be eased and the connectivity between the two cities of Maharashtra is improved. Mumbai–Pune Expressway expansion: One of India’s largest expressway expansion projects

In the recent development, it has been announced that the expressway will be widened from the existing eight lanes to ten at an additional cost of ₹1,420 crore, further raising the total project expenditure to nearly Rs 14,260 crore, making it one of India’s largest expressway expansion projects. As per a report by The Free Press Journal, the proposal will be submitted after Diwali and is expected to be implemented under the Hybrid Annuity Model (HAM), with 40% government funding and 60% contributed by private partners.

When will Mumbai–Pune Expressway expansion get completed?

As per media reports, the MSRDC officials said the appointment of an implementing agency of the project is likely by March 2026, with construction expected to begin soon after. If work starts in 2026, completion is targeted for 2029–30. Notably, the project will also align with the ongoing 13-km Khandala Ghat “missing link” project to ensure smoother traffic flow, especially during weekends and festive seasons.

Details on Mumbai–Pune Expressway

The 94.6-km Mumbai–Pune Expressway has been operational since 2002. Connecting Kalamboli in Navi Mumbai to Kiwale near Pune, the expressway serves around 65,000 vehicles daily, with numbers exceeding one lakh on weekends. Also, in order to ensure the project’s financial sustainability, toll collection rights of the Mumbai–Pune Expressway which are currently valid until 2045 may be extended. Most importantly, the expansion is expected to significantly enhance Maharashtra’s road infrastructure and intercity mobility.
