Chat show legend Graham Norton issued an update about his long-term health issue, after he was spotted wearing a sling at the BAFTA TV Awards earlier this year
Graham Norton has issued a health update after undergoing surgery to fix an injury that has plagued him for years. In a new interview, the chat show host explained that his left shoulder “has always been a bit odd” ever since he broke his collarbone as a child.
In recent years, he said the issue became “a bit painful” and “sore”, which eventually led him to go under the knife. “I was struggling to sleep,” the 62-year-old shared.
“So I had it done, and they put a bit of porcelain and plastic in there – and it’s been great.”
He continued: “The pain’s all gone, and I’m still doing exercises and having physio. I probably should be doing more, but I’m taking it quite seriously and lifting light weights.
“It meant that over the summer in Ireland I could swim in the bay near my house every day, and I loved it so much,” he added to Woman’s Weekly UK.
Graham underwent his shoulder operation just days before returning as a commentator for this year’s Eurovision Song Contest.
Previously speaking on BBC Radio 2 in May, the presenter joked: “This is my left shoulder’s first appearance on radio – a brand new shoulder. It’s less than two weeks old.”
He went on to say he was on “many” types of medication at the time and quipped: “So, if I say anything bad – it’s not my fault!”
His revelation came after he was spotted wearing a sling on the red carpet at the BAFTA TV Awards back in May.
On the night, The Graham Norton Show was one of six nominees up for Best Entertainment Performance. Despite the show’s ongoing popularity however, he missed out on the win to Joe Lycett’s Late Night Lycett.
Back in July, Graham opened up further about the emotional experience he had while in hospital.
“I was sitting in the hospital room and I wasn’t on any drugs or anything,” he recalled on his Wanging On podcast.
“It was before I was taken down, but you’re in the gown and those funny slippers, and you just feel so vulnerable. I knew I would, but I was surprised I got as totes emosh as I did.”
Sharing additional details about the procedure, he explained: “One bit is plastic – it’s a ball and socket – so one part is now plastic, the other porcelain, with a little bit of titanium stuck into the bone and a big long cut.”
Graham is back on screens this Friday with a brand-new edition of his talk show. The host will be joined by Glen Powell, Michelle Yeoh, Rosamund Pike, Jack Whitehall and Ed Sheeran.
The Graham Norton Show continues Friday at 10.40pm on BBC One.
