Green Day frontman Billie Joe Armstrong urged ICE agents to quit their jobs, warning that the Trump administration will turn on them at a later time following controversial errests

Iconic punk-rock band Green Day have taken aim at ICE and President Trump as America prepares to celebrate its biggest sporting event of the year. National Football League fans will be well aware that the Seattle Seahawks and New England Patriots will face off to win the Vince Lombardi Trophy at Super Bowl LVI on Sunday night.

The match marks the 60th Super Bowl for American Football – and Puerto Rican chart sensation Bad Bunny is set to wow fans during the halftime show. This weekend marks a menagerie of other music-related events connected to the sporting event, including a Kid Rock-fronted alternative halftime show, orchestrated by the conservative organisation, Turning Point USA.

On Friday night, music icons Green Day took to the stage at Spotify’s The Fanduel Party at Pier 29 in San Francisco – performing on their home turf in honour of the upcoming football grand slam. And while the group rattled through some of their biggest hits, it was the Trump administration and U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) officials who were slammed by the group.

Taking to the stage, the band – fronted by Billie Joe Armstrong, alongside bassist Mike Dirnt and drummer Tré Cool – altered some of their lyrics to make biting political statements. And in an open address from the stage, Billie Joe, 53, warned ICE agents that President Trump will turn on them.

He told the audience, per Variety: “To all the ICE agents out there, wherever you are, quit your s***ty-ass job. Quit that s***ty job you have. Because when this is over – and it will be over at some point in time – Kristi Noem, Stephen Miller, JD Vance, Donald Trump, they’re gonna drop you like a bad f***ing habit. Come on this side of the line.”

The group also amended lyrics of some of their songs to take a swipe at Trump – and late pedophile businessman Jeffrey Epstein, whose life has come back into the spotlight following the release of explosive emails that have been made public. While singing Holiday, Green Day changed the lyrics from “the representative from California has the floor” to “the representative from Epstein Island has the floor.”

Billie Joe also declared, “This goes out to Minneapolis,” before singing the track – seemingly in reference to recent ICE activities in the city. And changing the words of American Idiot, the frontman sang “I’m not part of the MAGA agenda” instead of “…part of a redneck agenda”.

Green Day are due to perform on Sunday evening ahead of the Super Bowl as part of a celebration of the best players of the year. Reacting to their appointment as music performers earlier this year, Billie Joe said: “We are super hyped to open Super Bowl 60 right in our backyard. We are honoured to welcome the MVPs who’ve shaped the game and open the night for fans all over the world. Let’s have fun! Let’s get loud.”

While Tim Tubito, the NFL senior director of event and game presentation, said in a statement at the time: “Celebrating 60 years of Super Bowl history with Green Day as a hometown band, while honouring the NFL legends who’ve helped define this sport, is an incredibly powerful way to kick off Super Bowl LX.

“As we work alongside NBC Sports for this opening ceremony, we look forward to creating a collective celebration for fans in the stadium and around the world.” And while Bad Bunny is set to lead the halftime show, plenty of other music acts will take part during the events of Sunday night.

Pop hunk Charlie Puth is set to perform the national anthem, while Brandi Carlile will sing America the Beautiful, and Coco Jones will belt out Lift Every Voice and Sing. Bad Bunny has proved to be something of a controversial music choice for the halftime show.

The Grammy-winning star recently snubbed the USA from his world tour as he took a political stance against the current government and activities involving ICE. As a Puerto Rican singer, he expressed concern that some fans could be arrested at his concerts if he were to perform in the USA.

He told i-D Magazine: “There were many reasons why I didn’t show up in the U.S., and none of them were out of hate—I’ve performed there many times. All of [the shows] have been successful. All of them have been magnificent. I’ve enjoyed connecting with Latinos who have been living in the U.S.

“But specifically, for a residency here in Puerto Rico, when we are an unincorporated territory of the U.S. … People from the U.S. could come here to see the show. Latinos and Puerto Ricans of the United States could also travel here, or to any part of the world. But there was the issue of—like, f***ing ICE could be outside [my concert]. And it’s something that we were talking about and very concerned about.”
