Greg Rutherford’s wife Susie shares how she does things ‘a little differently’ and let’s one of their son’s ‘take days off school’ following him being diagnosed with autism in 2023
Greg Rutherford ‘s wife Susie has candidly opened up on her family life and how they do things ‘a little differently’ following one of her sons being diagnosed with autism. She took to Instagram, where she explained how they let their neurodivergent son take ‘days off school to avoid causing damage’ and ‘pick’ their ‘battles’.
Susie, 35, and Greg, 37, are parents to three children, Milo, 11, and Rex, eight, and daughter Daphne, four. One of their sons was diagnosed with autism in 2023, and Susie recently opened up on social media on their family life, including trips to the hospital, taking days off school and how ‘fun things’ might be a sensory nightmare.
Susie wrote captions over a carousel of images, starting with: “Ways our family might do things a little differently to yours because of neurodiversity…”. The mum of three continued: “We might have very limited boundaries on screen time because it’s one of our successful regulating/decompressing options. We encourage participation with dress-up days/adhering to school uniform, but also pick our battles.”

“We often cut labels out of clothes, find items without seams, accept items which don’t really fit/have holes still being worn because they’re comfy and safe. We might end up at the hospital frequently due to extreme physical activities, but also might not go ’til it’s an emergency because of the downplaying of symptoms.”
She continued: “Really fun things might not be really fun for everyone and might in fact be a sensory nightmare. As a family, we’ll give lots of airtime to passions, hobbies and interests. We won’t refer to them as fixations. We’ll sometimes take days off school because we know it’ll do more damage to all of us, fighting to get someone across the threshold.”
Susie revealed their family do ‘one-on-one days quite often’ due to her children not wanting to do the same thing. She added that her aims are built around her children’s happiness and making sure that they are comfortable, ‘rather than academia’.
Giving her followers a huge insight into their daily lives, Susie added: “Big days out are often cut short before burnout sets in and that’s really ok. We make it a point that ducking out is an option. The most random, unusual, obscure sentences/catchphrases/earworms are muttered and shouted around our house frequently.
Susie finished off the informative post by writing: “We have to accept that sometimes the smallest of things will upset the entire routine / ruin the next three hours. Certain foods will be enjoyed for aaaages and *just* when you stock up, it’ll become something they won’t eat anymore. Family and friends know to greet our children ways.
“One of our kids in particular will say hello and socialise when they’re ready and people know that’s not him being rude.”
Her post was met with support from her followers, especially those who related, as one person commented: “Oh these are so very familiar in our neurospicy house”, while another added: “100% on all of these for our family too x”.
A third penned: “They’re so lucky to have parents who understand and adapt and value the things they enjoy”.
