Harry Styles has admitted that fame can be isolating and opened up about one of his struggles whilst touring. The global pop star got candid in an interview ahead of the release of his fourth album, Kiss All The Time. Disco, Occasionally, expected on 6 March.
The singer first became a household name during his time on The X Factor in 2010. The then 16 year old auditioned as a solo act but was put in the band One Direction, alongside Liam Payne, Niall Horan, Louis Tomlinson and Zayn Malik. The boy band became international superstars after the competition, and Harry continued that success with his solo music, which he started releasing in 2017.

Now, in an interview with Runner’s World, Harry has explained how being famous has isolated him, leading him to miss out on “positive experiences”.
He said: “Over the years, I had to say no to everything I was invited to, whether it was a friend’s birthday, a trip somewhere amazing, an opening. I started to wonder if I was saying no because I really was so busy or because it was more comfortable than saying yes.”
He added that he closed himself off to “protect” himself “from people who might bring negativity”, but in the process was “missing out on positive experiences”.
The Aperature singer later said he thought that “one of the things that can be complicated” when you are famous is how people see you. Harry shared that he felt that “when you become a known person” you go from being “an observer” to “the observed”. He said that artists like him remain the same person but the wider world may view you as “something different”.
He also opened up about how he “struggled” whilst touring. Harry is set to embark on a tour across the world from May, though he will also perform a ‘one night only’ show in Manchester on 6 March, which will be available to stream on Netflix. The signer said he wasn’t sure what he did for the world when he was touring.
He explained that “something I’ve often struggled with” whilst touring is “feeling like I’m not sure what I’m giving” and being uncertain about “what I’m adding to the world”. He continued to say that he felt like he was “getting so much” from fans but questioned whether he was contributing much back.
Finally, the star admitted that what he has “been rewarded” for “takes a lot of people”, whether that be the fans that have bought tickets to his gigs, producers who “make me great” and everyone on his team.
Harry certainly had a lot of people behind him when he made his comeback to music at the BRITs this year. The star opened the show with a performance of his new song, Aperature, with multiple backing dancers supporting him as he sang and danced across the stage.
Fans were delighted to see Harry perform again. Taking to social media, one fan said: “Wish I could be normal but unfortunately I’m literally shaking over Harry Styles performing at the Brits.” Another said: “I AM SHAKING,” as a third added: “I’M GONNA BE SICK.”
A fourth fan said: “HE IS A PERFORMER,” as a fifth said: “HARRY IS SO BACK THAT WAS INSANE.” A further post read: “Harry sounds GOOD. Aperture live is such a vibe.”
Another fan commented: “OMG DID HE HAVE TEARS IN HIS EYES!?? HARRY STYLES IS SO BACK.” A final tweet read: “Ok Harry actually ate that choreo.”
The interview with Harry is on the Runner’s World UK website now and in the May issue, on sale 1 April
