A new biography, William and Catherine: The Intimate Inside Story, by The Mirror’s royal editor Russell Myers, reveals that Prince Harry was furious after being told Meghan could not have police protection before they got married

Prince Harry was left ‘incredulous’ after he asked for royal protection for Meghan before they married, but was told no. It can be revealed that the Duke of Sussex was left thinking it was “one rule for him and another for me” after being aware that the Princess of Wales received unofficial palace guidance when dating his brother, Prince William and later got round-the-clock protection as soon as they became engaged.

A new biography, William and Catherine: The Intimate Inside Story, by The Mirror’s royal editor Russell Myers, reveals that Harry then appealed to his father, the then Prince Charles and William to intervene. But neither did, sparking a long-running and ugly feud. The book is is the first joint biography of the Prince and Princess of Wales in more than a decade and also highlights the couple’s resilience and dedication in the face of adversity, from the relentless media scrutiny and controversies of their 2022 Caribbean tour, to the shock cancer diagnoses of both the princess and King Charles.

Behind the scenes’ context of the prince and princess’ reaction to the departure from royal life by the Duke and Duchess of Sussex, the forming of the ‘Cambridge way’ and the death of Queen Elizabeth II, is also revealed for the first time.

It reveals that Harry demanded action be taken when Meghan became a target on social media due to her biracial heritage, but was told any protection would not be provided until they married. Charles then insisted he could not become involved as it was a government decision, despite the assistance given to Kate.

Meanwhile, the book also reveals how Kate had less interest than William in trying to stop the Duke and Duchess of Sussex from walking away from royal life, believing Prince Harry quitting his role was “inevitable”.

Despite the Prince of Wales being intensely saddened at his younger brother’s decision to leave the royal family, the princess was less interested in attempting to persuade Harry and Meghan to stay, it can be revealed.

Myers also tells how the princess believed Harry would want more than being a “bit-part player” in the monarchy amid his fundamental differences with her husband.

In further revelations, the future queen eventually realised she “could do no more to bring the brothers together” – despite previously being a “voice of reason” throughout the disintegration of their relationship.

Myers said: “I’ve spent almost a decade following The Prince and Princess of Wales as part of the Royal pack and have always believed there’s so much more to the couple than the spectacle reveals.

“The result of this biography is a truly intimate portrait of William and Catherine; providing not just unparalleled insight into who they are as individuals, but seismic revelations about them as a couple and the world they inhabit. This biography moves beyond the headlines as it explores love, resilience, and their journey together as they navigate their public duties amid this unprecedented era.”
