In a spirited display at the Grenada National Cricket Stadium, West Indies Women produced a commanding run chase to defeat Sri Lanka Women by six wickets in the third ODI of the series. Although the visitors had already clinched the series with wins in the first two matches, the hosts responded with pride, powered by a magnificent century from captain Hayley Matthews.

Harshitha Samarawickrama powers Sri Lanka to competitive total

After winning the toss, Sri Lanka Women elected to bat first, aiming to set a challenging target on a surface that offered some assistance to the bowlers early on. However, their innings suffered an early jolt when skipper Chamari Athapaththu was dismissed for a two-ball duck.

Hasini Perera steadied the innings briefly with a fluent 27 off 34 balls, striking five boundaries. The backbone of Sri Lanka’s total came from Harshitha Samarawickrama, who anchored the innings with a patient 70 off 112 deliveries, laced with seven fours. She found useful support from Kavisha Dilhari, who contributed a valuable 45 off 58 balls to keep the scoreboard ticking in the middle overs.

Late cameos from Dewmi Vihanga (12) and Sugandika Kumari (9 off 6) helped Sri Lanka reach a respectable 217/7 in their allotted 50 overs. For West Indies, Matthews led from the front with the ball as well, returning impressive figures of 2 for 33 in her 10 overs. Karishma Ramharack also claimed two wickets, while Afy Fletcher and Ashmini Munisar chipped in with one apiece to restrict the visitors from posting a bigger total.

Hayley Matthews’ masterclass century guides smooth chase

Chasing 218 for victory, West Indies Women had a shaky start as Qiana Joseph departed early for 2 and Shemaine Campbelle followed soon after for a duck, leaving the hosts under early pressure.

However, Matthews showcased her class and composure, crafting a superb 100 off 119 deliveries. Her knock, studded with 13 boundaries and a six, blended patience with timely aggression. She built a crucial partnership with the experienced Stafanie Taylor, who contributed a steady 38 off 70 balls to stabilize the innings.

Once the foundation was laid, Chinelle Henry added a valuable 32 off 48 deliveries, while Deandra Dottin provided the finishing touches with a brisk 24 off 29 balls, including a towering six. West Indies reached 218/4 in 46 overs, sealing the match comfortably with four overs to spare.

For Sri Lanka, Malki Madara impressed with two wickets, while Inoka Ranaweera and Athapaththu picked up one each, but they struggled to contain Matthews’ authoritative innings.

Despite the defeat in the third ODI, Sri Lanka Women secured the three-match series 2-1, having won the first ODI by 10 runs and the second by 14 runs. The victory, however, will give West Indies Women valuable momentum and confidence heading into the T20I leg of the tour.
