In a small village in Maharashtra, a family lived a life shaped by constant struggle. Their resources were limited, their days were long, and survival often depended on relentless hard work. Yet within that modest household lived a quiet but powerful dream — that education could one day change everything.
For Bapusaheb Gaikwad, that dream was born out of watching his parents’ sacrifices up close.
Growing up amid hardship
Bapusaheb Gaikwad grew up in a poor village where every day was a test of endurance for his family. His mother spent long hours working in other people’s homes — washing utensils, helping in mess kitchens, and sometimes cleaning houses. Despite the blisters on her hands and her constant exhaustion, she had only one worry on her mind: making sure her children never went to bed hungry.
His father worked as a watchman at construction sites. Many nights, he had to stay awake guarding the premises. Whether it was scorching heat, cold winters, or heavy rains, he never missed his duty. His only goal was to keep the household running and ensure that his children’s education somehow continued.
Amid this relentless hard work and sacrifice by his parents, Bapusaheb grew up witnessing poverty and hardship from a very young age. Watching his mother wash dishes in others’ homes and his father spend sleepless nights guarding construction sites planted a determination in his heart — he wanted to break the cycle of poverty.
Understanding the responsibility towards his family, Bapusaheb began working early in life. Alongside his studies, he delivered tiffins to students to help support household expenses. Studying during the day and working the rest of the time soon became his routine.
Even while studying in a simple village school, he remained a bright and hardworking student. Poverty never stopped his education; instead, it strengthened his resolve. He firmly believed that education was the path that could change his family’s life.
Chasing a bigger dream
Through dedication and hard work, Bapusaheb completed his diploma. Soon after, he was selected to work at the prestigious company Larsen & Toubro (L&T). The job brought financial stability and the promise of a comfortable future.

But Bapusaheb’s dream did not end with a stable career.
He carried a larger goal in his heart — to serve the nation and do something meaningful for society. With that vision, he made a courageous decision. He left his secure job and moved closer to his dream.
He completed his Bachelor’s degree in Arts from Yashwantrao Chavan Maharashtra Open University (YCMOU) and began preparing for the UPSC examination with complete dedication.
The journey, however, was far from easy. Bapusaheb faced repeated failures, hardships, and moments of disappointment. He appeared for the exam multiple times, and success often seemed within reach but slipped away.
Yet every setback only strengthened his resolve.
During this period, he was also selected for the position of Assistant Commandant in the CRPF — a highly respected and prestigious role. But his ambition stretched further. Determined to achieve his ultimate goal, he made another difficult decision and let go of that opportunity as well.
Years of perseverance, sacrifice, and unwavering determination finally bore fruit.
In the UPSC examination, Bapusaheb Gaikwad secured an All India Rank of 561.
Bapusaheb Gaikwad’s journey is not just a story of success — it is a story of struggle, sacrifice, and unbreakable belief. His life reminds us that poverty cannot define the limits of a person’s dreams.
Today, his journey stands as an inspiration for millions of young people.
