Alice Oseman shared the first details of the final Heartstopper chapter at the London Book Fair. From a feature film title to the emotional last page, here is what is next

Alice Oseman, author and illustrator of the global-sensation Heartstopper took to the London Book Fair Main Stage on March 10 – and gave the inside scoop on what to expect from the final volume in the series and the upcoming feature length film.

The Young Adult graphic novels took the world by storm when the first volume was released in 2019. Since then, there has been a Netflix adaptation, that Oseman was the screenwriter for, and now: a feature length film to bring this series to a close.

The graphic novel has made waves beyond the literary world, not least as it was mentioned at the UK Parliament debate on trans conversion therapy in 2022, where Labour MP Luke Pollard said that the show’s trans representation is saving lives. Further afield, the title has become a moniker for the Gen Z generation in Poland.

In the 2026 Emmy’s, the show won two awards: Joe Locke won Outstanding Lead Performer (In a Preschool, Children’s or Young Teen Program), while Oseman won Outstanding Writing (For a Young Teen Series) for the episode “Journey”. The books are #1 Sunday Times and New York Times bestsellers, selling over 10 million copies across 39 countries. It remains the UK’s fastest selling, graphic novel ever.

Heartstopper editor, Rachel Wade, Publishing Director at Hachette Children’s Group, was in conversation with the author at the book fair in London’s Olympia. Wade remembers being stopped in her tracks when she first read the graphic novel in 2018. “I was hooked,” she said, “but I definitely had no idea how it was going to take over the world.”

Wade added: “This graphic novel series was truly a global phenomenon. It’s changed readers and the publishing landscape forever.”

And now the final chapter nears for the queer love story. Oseman let the audience in on the news that last Saturday, she drew the final ever page of Heartstopper. This will be bittersweet for many fans across the world: more Heartstopper is coming, but it will be its last.

For those unacquainted with the series, Heartstopper follows the blossoming romance between Charlie Spring, an overthinking, openly gay student, and Nick Nelson, a cheerful rugby player who begins a journey of self-discovery after they meet at school. This heartwarming graphic novel explores the nuances of young love, mental health, and friendship with a gentle, inclusive touch that celebrates the beauty of finding where you belong.

Heartstopper’s Nick and Charlie began as supporting characters in Oseman’s debut novel, Solitaire. Oseman said: “I loved all of my characters, but I had these two characters who I just felt that I hadn’t told their full story. There was a story to tell.”

Oseman said that her wild success is “so surreal” and that it “doesn’t feel real”. The Netflix adaptation, which stars Joe Locke as Charlie and Kit Connor as Nick, launched Heartstoppers into a new stratosphere of popularity.

But while making the series, Oseman said they could not have predicted what was to come. Of the time spent filming, she thought: “we love this [show that] we’re making, but it’s niche. It’s for a specific group of people.

“It’s not gonna be a popular TV show. We were just happy we got to make this one for the season. So when it blew up, everyone was surprised. Like, really, no one expected that to happen.”

And now: there is a film on the horizon. Oseman told the London Book Fair audience: “We’re concluding the TV adaptation with a feature length filter. It’s called Heartstopper Forever. It’s coming out this year. It won’t be coming out before the book, but I can’t say exactly when it’s coming out.”

While there is no confirmed date for when Heartstopper will next be hitting our screens, Oseman was able to give fans a glimpse into the final installment, which will be published on July 2nd.

The author said: “Nick is getting ready to go to university, and Charlie is campaigning to be head boy of Truham Grammar School for Boys. Nick and Charlie start to realise that their lives are slightly diverging. Nick is about to leave.

“They are presented with the question of: what their lives are going to be like when they’re no longer in the same place. Like, how are they gonna deal with being in a long term relationship?”

After ten years of writing Heartstopper, what is next for the author? She stated that it “probably one of my dreams” to create a video game – though she isn’t sure if Nick and Charlie will translate to the game format!
