Home Bargains will shut 560 stores across England and Wales on Easter Sunday, April 5, but all 70 Scottish branches will remain open as usual under trading laws
A major retailer is preparing to close 560 locations for 24 hours in April. The well-known chain, which operates 630 outlets nationwide, has announced that branches in England and Wales will shut for the day.
Home Bargains shops will be closed on Easter Sunday (April 5) as the discount retailer provides staff with a much-needed rest. A company spokesperson said that all 70 Scottish stores will trade normally on Easter Sunday whilst the remaining outlets throughout the UK will close.
As there are 630 shops countrywide, this means 560 sites will be shut on the day.

Meanwhile, Home Bargains, which has approximately 28,000 employees, will trade on Good Friday with shortened hours from 9am until 7pm. Outlets will also open on Easter Monday with identical hours.
For Easter Sunday, the firm stated: “Our stores in Scotland will open as usual; however, all of our other stores will be closed.”
Under the Sunday Trading Act 1994, retailers exceeding 280 square metres in size are legally required to close on Easter Sunday. It is the same legislation that requires closure on Christmas Day to guarantee staff receive a day off, reports the Express.
However, smaller shops are excluded from the legislation and may continue trading. Customers are encouraged to telephone or visit their social media channels for the latest information on trading hours.
Further exemptions also apply to airport and railway station outlets, service stations, registered pharmacies and farms selling their own produce. Motor supplies retailers and suppliers of goods to aircraft are also permitted to trade on Easter Sunday.
Home Bargains continues to grow its portfolio of stores throughout the UK. The discount retailer has a particularly strong presence in the North West but has been opening new branches across the country in recent years.
The company, widely recognised as one of Britain’s leading discount retailers, expanded from 594 stores in 2023 to 617 by the close of 2024. It currently operates 630 stores across the UK, with ambitions to ultimately reach between 800 and 1,000 locations.
