Jennifer Esposito was the writer, director, producer, and star of her self-financed film, Fresh Kills, a 2023 American drama that premiered at the U.S. theatres in June 2024. However, while the film received critical acclaim for its storyline and powerhouse acting, it didn’t do well at the box office. Made on a budget of approximately USD 2 million (most of the cost that Esposito personally financed), Fresh Kills made only USD 68,310 in its limited theatrical release. 

The actress has never shied away from sharing the cost at which her dream project came to fruition. During the film’s 2024 press tour, Esposito repeatedly explained that the industry didn’t believe in her project, or in her ability as a debutante director. However, the actress didn’t back down and was ready to bet on the project. After spending 15 years trying to get the film made, she chose to self-finance.

“I was offered $5 million if a male would direct it instead of myself. I was offered a lot of money for stars to be in it. This town tells you what you can be and what you can’t be for so many years. I was just so over that and I thought, ‘Why am I asking the world to believe in me, I have to believe in me.’ So I’m going to put my money down. At the end of my life, am I going to be so happy that my house was paid off? Or am I going to be so happy that I gave myself the opportunity that I’ve been waiting for far too long? So I thought I’m going.”

In her recent video, Esposito reflected on her decision to self-finance her passion project. The actress reflected on the financial fallout that followed the movie’s release. In the emotional post, she wrote on the caption, “Imagine if we all actually had one another’s backs. Systems that are meant to divide actually might fall.” Speaking about her current condition, the actress reflected on the support her film has received. She said:

“Yeah, I’m looking like a– right now ‘cuz I’ve been crying ‘cuz I’m moving out of my home that I mortgaged to make my film… And then have people who are in the spotlight not be able to just throw one back and say, ‘Hey, thanks, watch this film.’ And then I said to myself, ‘You know what? Nobody owes anybody anything. And then I thought, ‘Do we? Do we as human beings?’ Maybe that’s why we’re in this problem right now, where we are. I think actually, we do owe each other something. We owe each other decency as human beings. That’s what we owe each other.”

Fans and fellow actors quickly rallied behind her. In Esposito’s comment section, Jerry O’Connell promised to spread the word, while actress Debra Messing praised her film, saying, “Your film was exquisite and I’m better for seeing it. The fact that you have to leave your home in order to give your art to the world is maddening.”
