How to put together a work outfit that you actually like

If you’ve ever found yourself at the receiving end of a “This is a school, not a fashion show” reprimand because your skirt was hitched an inch too high, entering the corporate world as an adult can dredge up some embarrassing memories. Unless, of course, you were to make the office your runway. The average officegoer spends a significant amount of their life under fluorescent lights, shuffling between meetings and coffee runs, before slowly dissolving into monotony. So if the corporate world insists on consuming most of your waking hours, the least it can do is bear witness to a fabulous fit. It’s time to shake up those tired corporate dress codes and take a leaf out of the books of these three professionals.

Sommyyah Awan, communications strategist, Toronto

“I’m in the office four to five times a week from 9 to 5, that’s a considerable amount of my life,” shares Awan. “If I look my best, I feel good. I work in an environment where I never know who I’m going to meet. And every encounter is an opportunity for a great first impression.”

Awan gravitates towards tailoring—suits, blazers, structured separates—but never lets it veer into stiff territory. “I have a very traditional style in the sense that I wear a lot of suits,” she says. “I’ll wear denim-on-denim looks too. But every now and then, I’ll add a touch of whimsy, whether that’s through accessories or an interesting silhouette.” Think clean lines, but with a pop of colour or something unexpected.
