Television presenter Richard Osman recently met the iconic Beatles star and shares the unexpected question Paul McCartney asked about his BBC quiz show
TV host Richard Osman has shared his “pinch me moment” when he had the chance to meet Sir Paul McCartney. The legendary songwriting partnership between Paul and fellow Beatles member John Lennon is considered the most successful in the history of music.
The band’s global album sales are estimated at a staggering 600 million. Some reckon that this figure could exceed a billion once single sales are factored in. In 1979, Paul was awarded the Guinness World Record for being the “most honoured composer and performer in music”, boasting 60 gold discs.
In 2009, he was further recognised as the “most successful songwriter”. Richard, former presenter of House of Games, recently met the 83-year-old Beatle, describing the experience as a “pinch me moment”.
Richard confesses that he was initially anxious about what to say to such an “iconic” musician. However, Paul posed a question that offered a glimpse into his personal life.
Speaking on his podcast, The Rest is Entertainment, Richard revealed: “I had the great pleasure of meeting Paul McCartney recently. It was one of the greatest things that ever happened to me.
“I thought, ‘What am I going to say to Paul McCartney?’ I do think that of all the billions of people who have ever lived, he’s had, pretty much he’s had one of the absolutely most extraordinary lives.
“And from where he came from, so I thought, ‘What am I going to say to Paul McCartney?’ And then he said to me, ‘On House of Games, do you film a day or do you come back the next day?’
“So I thought, ‘Great, there you go’. It was extraordinary to see him. What an extraordinary man and how lovely it is to be alive at the same time as him, and what joy he has given to everybody. It was a pinch me moment, I love it that he watches House of Games.”
Richard compared the experience to discovering that the late George Michael was a fan of Deal or No Deal. He remarked: “I love it when icons and legends are human beings, it’s such a lovely thing.”
The 55-year-old presenter is well accustomed to mixing with musical royalty. His older sibling Mat Osman plays bass for rock outfit Suede.
Mat, now 58, established Suede back in 1989 alongside bandmates Brett Anderson and Justine Frischmann. The group’s first album, which dropped in 1992, secured the Mercury Music Prize and is widely regarded as having sparked the Britpop era of the 1990s.
During a recent podcast conversation about artificial intelligence potentially replacing musicians, Richard took a lighthearted swipe at his brother. Co-host Marina Hyde questioned: “Are you just another job that’s getting replaced by AI? Because humans are annoying, people in bands are definitely annoying, that’s the whole point of them.”
Richard seized the opportunity for a cheeky dig at his older brother, responding: “Listen, I grew up with one and I love him but…yeah.”
