Vocal coach CeCe Sammy-Lightfoot has said ‘there’s a change that’s about to happen’ and performers will be feeling the nerves as the Brit Awards heads north for the first time

A vocal coach to some of the biggest stars in showbiz has revealed why this year’s Brit Awards performers will be feeling the nerves. For the first in its nearly 50-year history, the annual ceremony is leaving London and heading north to Manchester.

And while CeCe Sammy-Lightfoot is excited for what lies ahead, the advisor believes there will be a number of uncomfortable moments for the stars on the night. CeCe has sang with the likes of Diana Ross, and been a coach on shows such as Pop Idol, American Idol and The X Factor during her 30 years in the industry.

Her career also saw her be part of the Brit Awards voting academy – and she feels this year’s switch of venues is going to make things “extremely different” this year. “The fact that it’s in Manchester, it’s a completely different environment in terms of how they set the stages up, how they have the lighting, how they’ve got the cameras,” insists CeCe in an exclusive chat with the Mirror.

“I mean, there are so many factors. And I think as a result, we’re all going to experience something that’s very, very new, because the performers who have, who have done things at the Brit Awards before will also be there, but they will be in uncomfortable situations, as they’re feeling the energy from the directors, from the producers, from the people doing the likes. So I think everyone’s going to be quite nervous.”

But she doesn’t see the nerves being a negative aspect. She continued: “That sense of nerves will actually bring out a sense of magic that we haven’t had for a few years. So I’m quite excited about it.

“I also think that the performers will have nerves in a new way, because they will feed off people who’ve already performed at the Brit awards, but then the people who are performing for the first time, as well as people who are not performing.

“But they’re having to sit there and listen to what’s being said. So I’m really excited, actually, because I think it’s a new experience that all of us are going to have.”

CeCe praised the decision to move from the capital, saying it no longer has to be “the place to go”. And she has urged viewers to pay close attention to the Breakthrough Act section. “I’m really looking forward to seeing what happens, and I bring it back to everyone to please, sort of support and learn from everything that you see that night.”

As well as working with musicians, CeCe has helped actors such as Idris Elba and Hugh Grant. And she had nothing but praise for the actors. “They are amazing on every front,” she gushed.

“And what I loved about it is they were very technical in how they approached it. So I didn’t have to, you know, as well as being a vocal coach, but with some artists, I’ve had to become a counsellor, a psychologist, having to sit down there and wait to get them to that headspace.

“These two gentlemen, I didn’t have to do that at all. They were right on the spot, on point. And for me, that’s very, very inspiring. I think it again, also shows the mindset.”
