New Delhi: Drawing lessons from Operation Sindoor, the Indian Army is set to procure 850 kamikaze drones to strengthen the capabilities of all three defence services and special forces.

Defence sources told ANI that the Army’s proposal is at an advanced stage and is likely to be approved soon by a high-level meeting of the Defence Acquisition Council scheduled for the last week of this month.

Under the fast-track procurement process, the Army plans to acquire around 850 loitering munitions along with their launchers from indigenous manufacturers.

Sources said the Indian Army already operates a large number of loitering munitions and is aiming to induct nearly 30,000 such systems in the near future to equip its combat formations.

Each infantry battalion will now be equipped with an Ashni platoon, tasked with operating drones for strikes against enemy positions and for counterinsurgency operations.

During Operation Sindoor, the Army extensively used drones to target terrorist headquarters inside Pakistan. Seven of the nine identified terrorist targets were destroyed on the first day of the operation, launched in retaliation for the Pahalgam terror attack that killed 26 people.

The drones were later deployed against the Pakistan Army as well, inflicting heavy casualties and causing significant damage to enemy infrastructure along the borders, sources added.
